My Special Skill: Something that I have invested a lot of my time in before is sewing. Sewing involves a variety of processes and planning since you have to have a clear idea of what you want before it is done. It is also an important life skill and can help you develop fine motor skills, improve your focus and concentration, and can teach you the importance of patience and self-control. The accomplishment of having something handmade is one of the best feeling to have. I sometimes showcased my own work by dressing myself in costumes I have made and going to Comicon Conventions. I have also had strangers come up to me and take pictures of me as well.

Something Unusual: Something interesting about myself is that I cry when I laugh. When I am really sad or watch something that is really sad, I come close to a verge of tears but usually do not cry other than when I am laughing. I grew up playing the third generation games of Pokemon, I quickly fell in love with it and played all of the generation 1-5 games, I couldn't play the other generations as I don't have the money for a 3ds or any import of the games into recent consoles and devices. It was a sort of escape for me, playing late at night and when I got home from school. I still collect Pokemon cards to this day, and if you see the case on my phone I have a Pokemon card in there which I like, I'll show anyone my collection if you ask!

Something interesting about me is that I have a fear of horses because when I was 12 I went to visit my family in Mexico, and my cousins liked to race horses. I watched them one day and the horse went off the track and rammed into me because I somehow ran into its path in a fit of panic. I was knocked out and woke up winded and scared of the horsies.

I always loved that in baseball if you succeed only 3 out of 10 times, you are considered among the best. So I would always love to challenge myself with that. I love football because of how close it brings you with your teammates and the memories that it gave me that will last a lifetime. It was also cool to be able to hit someone and not get in trouble haha. But most of all, after every game in both sports, we would always go get food together as a team and it was the best thing ever, especially after a huge win.

Something interesting about me is that I did not decide that I was coming to GCU until exactly one week before move-in day. It was definitely a decision that God led me to and I am very happy to be going to college here.

In both sports I was able to improve my skills of working in team environment to help me succeed later on in life. I also am a scuba diver and have dove in many places in the Caribbean islands.

I loved being the "captain" of the team during the days that I pitched, and I think that me pitching lead to my position as a lead over at GCBC, the on-campus coffee shop.

One interesting fact about me is that I have been to 9 different major league ballparks and 22 different minor league parks. Something unusual about me is that I was actually a miracle child. I was pronounced dead by many doctors because I did not have a heartbeat or showed any signs of life in ultrasounds. After receiving those news my mother had to have a C-section, and that's when they discovered I was actually alive.

I feel very confident in my ability to do the things I have learned so far; however, there is still so much that I have to learn.

Something unusual about me is that I was born left handed. That doesn’t seem like a big deal to some, but in my culture, it is deemed as a curse and as witchcraft. Haha! My name Alaina I have a lot of different nicknames like Lain, Laina, Jane but mainly only my family calls me them. I am currently majoring in Communications. I grew up in Plainfield, Illinois about 40 minutes outside of Chicago so Arizona is a big change for me weather wise.

I would say I know a lot about health-related stuff. Health is very important to me. My grandpa used to always say that health is wealth and I guess it just stuck with me. I also have always been in sports my whole life and it’s important to know and understand how to treat your body well so you can keep progressing. I always love learning more about health because it’s something that you can control and always improve on.

I received my MA in English Literature and graduate certification in Rhetoric, Writing, and Digital Media Studies from NAU last May. This semester, I am also finishing up my graduate certification in communication studies which includes an independent study into podcast creation and culture--meaning I will be creating my own podcast!

On Halloween 2019, I quit my job of 22 years in the telecom industry in order to pursue teaching, writing, and other creative activities full-time. Currently, I am in my second semester as an instructional assistant at Grand Canyon University and in March, I will teach my first class at Park University in multicultural communications.

Between the classes I am assisting, teaching, or taking, there are 10 total! You should see my assignment calendar!

When my head isn’t spinning from academia, I write, sing, perform in community theatre, and tell stories—live and through audio documentaries. I am a two-time Moth Story Slam winner and will be in an upcoming Grand Slam competition in Phoenix some time this year.

In between all of that stuff, I am the TNR captain in my neighborhood, Trap, Neutering, and Returning any free roaming cat without a collar that I see in my neighborhood. I’ve TNR’d 15 cats so far and found homes for five that were not yet feral. A couple of them made their way inside my house as well on top of the two cats and two dogs my husband and I already had.

Together, we take care of our furry brood, watch Netflix, travel, and swim with sharks both from within and without a cage.
