1. If you were to change one thing about the novel, what would it be? Why?

If I could change one thing about Bertram's Hotel it would be the pacing. Per usual, Christie masterfully crafts motives, characters, twists, and action, but the pacing is very convoluted. I was almost halfway through the book before it began to grab at my attention with any action or real mystery. Only in the last fifty pages were tensions running high, and even then the resolution to the book left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Many of the loose ends were not tied up and it felt so much was missing. Another problem with the pacing was that clearly Christie was building up to the first murder but she failed to keep my interest while doing so. If I were to rewrite this novel, I would spread out the pacing and add a little spice to keep things interesting leading up to the murder.

5. Review the book 1-5 stars.

I would rate this novel 2 stars because it failed to keep me interested for most of the build up, the pacing was very messy, and the loose ends didn't tie themselves up. However, the twist was shocking left you reanalyzing everything following up to that point, now finding the clues that you missed or didn't make sense before. Even though I didn't enjoy this novel, the twists are Christie's greatest strength as an author and reward those who pay attention.

A character who made a decision I do not agree with was Bess Sedgwick. After Elvira confessed the murder of Michael Gorman to her, she opted to take the blame, made an escape, and died in a car crash promptly after. Even though Elvira was her daughter, she was still a murderer. If I was in Bess' position, I would go to the police (and Jane Marple) and tell them it was Elvira who shot Gorman with Ladislaus' gun.

'That is what she said. Have you anything to add?'
Elvira looked for a long time to him. Very faintly she shook her head.
'No,' she said. 'I haven't anything to add.'
Then she turned and went out of the room.
'Well,' said Miss Marple. 'Are you going to let her get away with it?'
There was a pause, then Father brought down his fist with a crash on the table.
'No,' he roared-'No, by God I'm not!'
Miss Marple nodded her head slowly and gravely.
'May God have mercy on her soul,' she said."
This is part of the book's final page, after Chief Inspector Davy/Father and Miss Marple have realized that Elvira was the murderer, and after he leaves Father decides that he is going to make sure Elvira is punished for the murder of Gorman, even though he has lackluster evidence, no matter what.

1. The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie - This book is widely known and revered for its twist ending. This book also has a twist ending and it's one of the best parts, in my opinion. If you enjoyed the twist, and Christie's writing style, you'd also enjoy this.
2. Nemesis by Agatha Christie - This is another Miss Marple mystery, and comes right after At Bertram's Hotel. Miss Marple read a letter addressed to her, from a recently deceased Mr. Rafiel. He leaves her instructions to investigate a crime after his death. But the letter doesn't tell her who is involved, where, or when it happened. Soon another crime faces her- murder.
3. All Shots by Susan Conant - This book follows another female detective, similar to Marple, she is often underestimated. While searching for a lost dog, she finds a corpse. Soon others get tangled in this web, such as a naive dog-alker and a Harley-riding stranger with ties to the dead woman.

My favorite part of the novel was in the end when Father and Miss Marple were discussing Elvira. I liked this part so much because it gives the reader a completely new perspective on Elvira and her motivation. Father calls it beginner's luck, and they are both impressed by how she hid it so well. I also enjoyed how Marple describes her a 'A Child of Lucifer'.

Chief Inspector Davy more directly finds things out. For instance, when he was questing Ladislaus because it was his gun that shot Gorman.

The part of this book teens could relate to the most is Elvira's behavior (not the murdering). She is young, very worrisome and paranoid, and is hopelessly in love with Ladislaus and is also worried she won't get her inheritance, so she acts out. She clearly doesn't have it all together and neither do most teens, so they might relate to her character the most.
