Writing in the Disciplines

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Anchor Standards for Writing focus on three types of writing (argument, informative/explanatory, and narrative), and presents writing as a learning, thinking, communication, and knowledge-building process that is essential for knowledge development in each discipline.

Students need to write routinely, they need feedback from the teacher, peers, and others, and they also need opportunities to collaborate with peers in the writing process.

Scientific Argument, it follows the goals of science and the process of scientific inquiry.

The goal of Scientific Argument is to generate, verify (through empirical and experimental data), communicate, debate, and modify explanations for the purpose of refining and building consensus about scientific ideas or phenomena.

Most scientific writing follows a problem-solving pattern.

In science, students describe experiments that could be replicated, summarized their procedures, observations, and results, and provide evidence that supported or did not support their hypothesis.

Assessing Student Learning in the Disciplines

Assessment of the student learning plays an important role in the informing and improving student learning and instruction, and in preparing students for college and career readiness.

Implementation of the CCSS and the new generation assessment systems will require more effective systems of accountability, engaging, relevant, and rigorous curricula and materials, and focused teacher preparation and ongoing professional development.

Effective assessment in the disciplines is based on authentic tasks and meaningful learning processes and contexts.

Effective assessment in the disciplines is also multi-dimensional, and uses a wide range of tools and methods.

Authentic assessments provide teachers with more immediate and instructionally relevant information about student learning.

Assessment should be ongoing and flexible.

Teachers should set clear, fair, and objective grading criteria for student performance, communicate standards and criteria to students, and provide feedback to students about their learning.
