Web. 14 Mar. 2017.

Election, Media, Popularity, Ratings

This article discusses how the more exposure a candidate got in the media the higher their popularity was. This article states that the media has almost total control of the election. There is also a graph that shows the correlation between media coverage and poll ratings.

This to me all makes sense because the more people hear about a canidate the more likely they are to vote for them and pay attention to them. Also, the media does seem to have control over the polls and they have the power to sway votes. The media will only cover what they feel is important.

Peoples confidence is based on the number of likes they get on a photo. Also, comments about someones looks are also posted alot on social media.

All of the points in this article are very true and something that I see on social media on a daily basis. I always thought about these issues but it was cool to see an actual correlation between the two. This will be really useful in my portfolio.

This is because people are more inclined to believe their peers over a company that is just trying to sell their product. People are also turning away from standard ads and turning to social media for ads.

This study is very relatable. I find that every time I log onto social media I see someone posting their thoughts on a product. Teens are the most susceptible to developing a negative body image as a result of social media.

Social media is a platform to seek approval and people base their self worth solely on the amount of likes they get.

Claywell, Charlie R. "What Is Social Network Theory?" LoveToKnow. LoveToKnow Corp, n.d. Web. 10 Apr. 2017.

Multiplying effect, separation, relationships

On average there are six degrees of separation between people. This means that on average everyone knows each other through six people. This theory was first tested in 1960 when Stanley Milgram decided to send out letters to 100 random people and tell them to send the letter to one person. They were able to send these letters to someone else who they though might know the designated end person. On average the letter traveled through 6 people before it made it to the targeted person. This experiment was not the most accurate because there was not truly a way to track how many people received the letter. In 2003 scientists at Columbia University held another experiment following the same design, but this time they used emails so that it could be better tracked and through this they found that it took on average 5-7 people to reach the designated target. (Claywell, What is Social Network Theory?)

This theory shows how social media can be incredibly connective. If you scroll through your friends list you are almost guaranteed to be able to connect to anyone in the world through 6 people. This theory is mind blowing because it takes such a larger world and somehow makes it feel much smaller.
