Argus was treated as "rubbish now" as a result of his age since Odysseus has left. He lays "upon a mass of dung before the gates-- manure of mules and cows..." But whenever Odysseus arrived home, he heard his voice nearby and did his best to wag his tail, nose down, with flattened ears, not having any strength to move closer to his master. Odysseus looked away from him, wiping a salt tear from his cheek and hiding it from Eumaeus.
