Transitional Bilingual Education refers to a program that will teach the student in their home language (L1) initially with the intention of achieving proficiency in the new language (L2). When proficiency is achieved on L2, L1 is dismissed from the school setting (Baker & Wright, 2021).

This form refers to teaching a new language (L2) to a student to simply obtain a different language knowledge. L1 is his home language and the societal language. L2 is considered a "foreign" language, even though sometimes is widely used in the home country as well. The lessons consist of a 30-45 minutes class that will present such language superficially since not enough time for submersion in the language is provided (Baker & Wright, 2021).

This is a rare form f education. A student will intentionally immerse in the L2 language omitting the use of L1 to preserve and overachieve on L2. This is not a common form of education and is not an option for a school system (Baker & Wright, 2021).

My wife and I are an example of this form of bilingual education. My wife moved from the USA to Honduras with basic knowledge of Spanish (L2) and was able to be immersed in the language while living there and develop proficiency in L2. For me, it was vice-versa, moved to the USA from Honduras with basic knowledge of English (L2) and have developed L2. This form puts more emphasize on L2.
