Be it Bach's 1722 Prelude and Fugue in C major or, as Ratliff references, Thelonious Monk's 1968 Thelonious, or countless pieces composed throughout all of time, single notes have been applied for the purpose of establishing key centers, creating theming, and adding depth and beauty to any composition. A prime example of the usage of ostinato in music is provided by Ratliff as he analyzes Thelonious Monk's Thelonious: "[the ostinato] could describe the world around him changing rapidly, while he stays the same..." (Ratliff 71). This usage of ostinato adds great depth to the composition because it causes it to register on a level deeper than a purely sonic level: the composition's worth then lies not only in its sound but in its artistic meaning as well. Ratliff also examines ostinato, or, as he terms it, "the stubborn note" from the listener's standpoint: "the stubborn note, for the listener, is its own phenomenon. When you listen to a single note sounded repeatedly... you are listening to a either a form of resistance or play.
