Biography

Taufiq Sawal’s first foray into the field of sound engineering started out by his need to supplement his NS income and a chance meeting with a fellow acquaintance who got him started out moonlighting as an AV rental company crew. Intrigued by industry, he followed on this career path well after his ORD and decided that a formal education would greatly benefit him resulting in his enrolment into LASALLE as a student of the Audio Production Course.

His first year there saw him volunteering as a sound operator for one of the school’s graduation show and the theatre bug has hit him hard ever since. Under the close guidance of sound designer Jing Ng, he has since undertaken many more high profile shows in various capacities in the theatre scene> His stints in theatre include being an RF tech for Crescendo The Musical (2016) at Kallang Theatre and Tech crew for Pangdemonium’s Rent (2017) This was soon followed by opportunities to being on board as a sound operator for local theatre company Toy Box for their show ‘Prism’ and Pangdemonium’s first original play, Tango (2017)

Besides theatre, Taufiq also has a vested interest in the local music scene. Being an avid and ardent fan of the local music scene growing up, being in close promixity and social circles with musicians in LASALLE has afforded him the chance to join Animal Kollective; a local group of sound engineers/ crew that undertakes a lot of projects with local bands for various shows and EP launches. He was also briefly the band tech for local musican Gentle Bones and Sam Rui before taking a hiatus to concentrate on finishing his studies.

I reached the venue around 2pm, 15 mins before the Rental company truck arrived with the gear. I helped unload the equipments before briefing the crew on where to the console and speakers should be.

Set up was fast and was finished within an hour proceeded by a quick line check to make sure all the lines were through. Artists arrived on time and we began sound check as sheduled. This was when we realized the singer has a problem with consistency in her voice projection and her singing voice is naturally shrill/sharp. I've made the necessary adjustments in the EQ and advice the singer to project more of her voice. The singer is from a getai background and as such she is used to coming down from the stage to interact with the audiences and engage them; this proved to be a problem during soundcheck as the close proximity of the speakers to the front row meant I had to vigilant to prevent feedback when she was standing in front of the speakers.
