My attitude towards animals

Animals I like? ie as companion
Cats, dogs, horses, rodents, lizards of different kinds, pigs, goats, sheep, some kinds of small exotic animals. Actually, almost any animal can be a companion, but in general I don't approve of keeping wild animals as domestic pets, with very few exceptions.

Animals I am afraid of?
Poisonous animals and insects, snakes, also animals whose reactions I can not predict basing on their body language and facial expressions: crocodiles, bears, etc.

Animals of which I eat meat or other products ie milk
For now, I only eat chicken or turkey meat, but I hope to give it up someday, too, also I eat fish and sea food, dairy products, honey produced by bees

Animals I consider as nuisance?
Many insects – flies, mosquitoes, spiders, but I realise they have their place in this world and their important role… I'm not sure there are any totally useless species in nature…

Animals that need more protection
Wild animals, birds, bees. Due to human activities, so many species were lost to the planet and so many are on the edge of extinction right now… also in the cities many birds are endangered – in Moscow, Russia, pigeons and sparrows and other kinds of birds are almost eliminated by the unwise actions of our city government. And also the mysterious general mortality of bees all around the world is a serious sign of global ecological imbalance. I read about many versions of why it happens, but more likely to me that global cell networks affect them…

Love for all living beings

I come from an ordinary Russian family, not very religious. Our ancestors never lived in the village, as far as I know, so I'm not sure there was anyone in the family who kept livestock or poultry for food. Animals in their live were mostly cats and dogs as companions (also my grandfather worked in police and they had working dogs), I mean, they never had a dog on chain in the yard, but only with the family, inside the house, the same about cats. They were always family members. I know that my great-grandfather was always taking animals from street to treat and feed them... And my grandfather was also very kind to animals. And my parents love animals. And I do, too, and I'm a volunteer for stray animals. I see many people around, who think: "it's just a dog/ a cat, it doesn't need some special treatment, or good food, or new impressions, or expensive meds..." Between animals wellbeing and their own comfort they always choose the latter. And that's not even close to where I'm standing. There's no such thing as "just an animal", any life matters!
As I said, our family is not very religious, but we were raised on Christian values, and maybe one of the most important ones is Love. God is Love! And it means not only love for other people, but for all forms of life surrounding us, all the biodiversity. And it's also a resposibility. As it is said in the Bible, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, like us: and let him have rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every living thing which goes flat on the earth". This doesn't mean we can exploit them or be cruel to them, but it means we are in charge of them! And I guess my attitude towards animals is defined with this feeling of responsibility.

System of human and veterinary medicine in my country

Human medicine system in Russia has 4 levels:

1) the institutions providing primary health care to the population in the cities and rural areas.

2) medical care in hospitals, clinics, maternity homes, sanatoria, specialized educational institutions, etc.

3) medical institutions of republican, regional level (large multidisciplinary hospitals).

4) institutions of federal and interregional importance rendering the most difficult and expensive types of medical care.

All these institutions are controlled by local or central (republican) bodies of health care. The Ministries of Health of different regions submit to The Ministry of Health of Russian Federation.

As for the veterinary system, when you need help for sick or injured animal, you'd rather go to a private clinic, there are planty of them and the quality (in general) is better there than in state clinics. But the problem is, in Russia veterinary field is not licensed, so anyone with vet education may provide veterinary services. And there's almost no way to control their quality.

Public veterinary service includes Department of veterinary science of the Ministry of Agriculture, its regional and local departments, also veterinary research and production institutions, veterinary labs, institutions of veterinary and sanitary examination at enterprises and markets. They prevent epidemies in animals, including zoonotic, control the safety of livestock products.
The head of Department of veterinary science is Chief state veterinary inspector.

State veterinary clinics that are called "Stations of animals' diseases control" submit to city (area) vet science committies. They arrange free rabies vaccinations for pets, also they have license for autopsy and utilization of bodies (this one is needed), exercise control at pet shows, etc. They also offer other veterinary services, just like private clinics.

The system has its shortfalls, first of all because owners and volunteers prefer using private vet servises that give no guarantees and are not protected by licensing. But the Public veterinary service works quite effective in questions of livestock products control and in preventing of epidemies. I don't have info on their work with zoonotic deseases. All I can say, last year I tried to find the most accurate blood test for canine brucellosis and found out that the kit for that test is no longer produced in our country... Which is not wise.
