It mandates privacy protection for patients. HIPAA privacy rule restricts what a medical professional can disclose to others.   • Professionals are not to speak about a patient with any sort of identifiable information.
  • Only those who are working with the patient should be spoken to about the patient's medical records.
  • Patients' personal records should also never be left in open public spaces.
  • Professionals should make reasonable efforts to avoid being overheard and reasonably limit shared information. 
  • Professionals are allowed to disclose protected health information to a family member or other person involved when if the individual is present during the disclosure. 
  • Professionals are allowed to communicate with patients regarding their health care, including through the mail or by phone. Messages may be left with family members, on voice mail, or other ways with patient consent.
