The Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square) is connected to the Trinità dei Monti,

a French church situated a long staircase, the "Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti", better known as the Spanish Steps, near Porta del Popolo

which in the ancient was the main entrance to Rome. The square has an unusual shape. This shows the eastern part of the square which was called Piazza di Spagna because the Spanish Embassy was moved to a palace shown in the right side of the plate; The elegant staircase consists of 135 steps over twelve different flights. It is especially beautiful in May, when it is decorated with flowering azalea, and in July, because square and all steps are decorated to receive the Donne Sotto le Stelle fashion shows. The steps are usually very crowded; it attracts tourists as well as locals who use it as a gathering place, indeed many inns were positioned near the square to cater for foreign travellers, who were glad to quickly find a conveniently placed accommodation after a long and tiring journey; for this reason the area became known as the Strangers' Quarter.

The Vatican City is the heart of the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to being the seat of the Pope, there are a collection of extraordinary works of art and architecture. At the Vatican Museums there are ancient Roman sculptures such as the famous Laocoonte Group, as well as Renaissance frescoes of the Stanze di Raffaello and the Sistine Chapel, it is also famous for Michelangelo's frescoes.
The name Vatican City was first used in the Lateran Treaty which established the modern city-state. The name is taken from Vatican Hill, the geographic location of the state. "Vatican" is derived from the name of an Etruscan settlement, Vatica or Vaticum meaning garden.
Moreover, within the territory of Vatican City are the Vatican Gardens, which account for more than half of this territory. The gardens, established during the Renaissance and Baroque era, are decorated with fountains and sculptures.
