Asian American's participated in strikes at San Francisco State University, and University of California, and they wanted to design the programs and who would teach them. Asian Americans identified as an ethnic group instead of a racial group. Proclamation 4417 was signed by President Gerald Ford that claimed the internment a "national mistake". After the Vietnam war many of these groups dissolved. The first lesbian rights organization in the US was founded in 1955. The Daughters of Bilitis was founded in San Francisco, California by activist couple Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon.
