A. Subsistence farming is when people who usually live in LDC's they farm food primarily to feed their families and not to sell for a profit.

B. The global region that this agricultural practice might occur is in North Africa or South West Asia.

C. The type of agricultural practice that is being illustrated in the photograph is Pastoral Nomadism. This is when people in developing countries herd domesticated animals. They usually live in places where the climate is very dry where planting crops can't happen.

D. One social impact resulting from Pastoral Nomadism is that this type of agriculture take place is that agribusiness has been shoving it to the side so it's becoming less and less prominent and making less money and their standard of living in these countries are going down.

E. One environmental impact resulting from Pastoral Nomadism is desertification.

F. Desertification is the degradation of land, partially in semi-arid areas. This usually occurs because of human actions like, excessive cropping, animal grazing and tree cutting. Another name for this is semiarid land degradation.

G. I believe that with the global trends in agriculture right now I believe that Pastoral Nomadism is going to contract. Many of these people are falling victim to modern technology. People now can drive in cars and talk on telephones. We don't need to wait weeks and weeks at a time to get a message to someone else across the country by pastoral nomadism. This is why I believe that pastoral nomadism is going to contract because we have modern technology and we don't need pastoral nomadism like we did hundreds of years ago.

3. One thing that I learned was that commercial farming has a lot bigger farms. Which are around 415 acres. They have bigger lands because they have a lot of big expensive machines that they have to use. Another thing that I learned was that a lot of subsistence farms were actually passed down through generations. These lands are usually pretty small because they don't have the machines to be effective or the money to but the machines. They also have to keep dividing up the land with all the kids that they pass the land down to. The last thing that I learned is that in MDC's where commercial farming is more prevalent there are less farmers, where only 5% of the population is in agriculture. (inversely for subsistence farming in LDC's)

2: One thing that I already remember was that subsistence farming is farming food primarily to feed the people in the family and not to sell for a profit. Another thing that I already remembered was the commercial farming is farming food for profit , the food is to be sold off the farm.

1. The one big takeaway that I got from this video was that commercial farming is food to make a profit. They have bigger and more costly machines with huge acres of land. Commercial farming is found more in MDC's. While subsistence farming is found more in LDC's where they have smaller plots of land, more of the population is involved in agriculture and they have older work materials. These people who practice subsistence farming are farming food primarily for their family to eat.

The cost of beef

After reading this article about the cost of beef I learned that what goes on behind the scenes of the production of beef is one of the worst things we as humans can do to our planet. I predict in the next 10 years that the beef industry will get slightly bigger, and as more people come out of poverty more people are going to start eating more meat because now they can actually afford to eat meat and more of it. To support this in the article it said that ,"as many millions of people worldwide emerge from poverty, their eating habits will inevitably change. With increased affluence comes increased food consumption – and changes in the type of food consumed" I predict that in the next 50 years as our population grows exponentially so will the beef industry. To support this in the article it said that "By 2050 it is projected to total about 9.7 billion. By 2050, more than billion more people will have changed to diets higher in meat, eggs, and dairy." These two facts from the article show that as our population grows and grows, the amount of beef being produced will also have to grow. I also predict that in the next 100 years the effects of the beef industry and what they are actually doing is going to be more noticeable and hopefully more people will want to do something about it. In the article it talked about "Cattle in feedlots produce huge volumes of manure. The waste flows into lagoons, which in turn can pollute local rivers." In the next 100 years there is going to be way more beef being produced then there is now so there going to be hundreds of thousands of tons of manure and waste going into fresh clean water that now can't be used. Also in the article it talked about "Feedlot operations release ammonia, methane, and hydrogen sulfide – and strong odors – into the air." Right now we are still trying to understand the effects of these pollutants in the air. I can only imagine how much worse it can get in 100 years. I believe that if we want to save our planet and ourselves from these terrible effects from the beef industry there are things that we need to. We should try and limit our beef intake and try for more vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. If we all do our part in trying to take be more aware of what we are doing to our planet than hopefully my predictions will be wrong.
