The UN is an intergovernmental organization (IGO), with 193 member states.

The UN was founded October 24, 1945 in San Francisco, California. It was approved by the senate in July by a vote of 89 to 2. The world wanted peace after World War II, so representatives of many countries came together at the first United Nations conference. 

The mission of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security. 

Success for this non-state actor would mean limited violence, the protection of human rights, and reduced conflict. 

The way the UN ensures international peace and security is by hosting conventions, conferences to meet with countries. 

They will sign treaties and establish legal frameworks. Ex: Paris agreement 

The international court of justice settles legal disputes between nations. 

The UN human rights council investigates human rights abuses. 

They work with agencies like UNICEF for crisis response and emergency relief. 

They also provide lots of research on global data. 

UN also uses the media to spread awareness and advocate for relevant issues. 

The UN has had a significant impact on public opinion. They do so by setting global standards in terms of human rights, climate policies, and public health. By coming together and facilitating agreements amongst states, they raise awareness and help society understand the importance of certain issues. 

They have been able to shape global politics. 

Some critics argue that the UN lacks being able to prevent conflicts and doesn’t give the necessary amount of attention to certain issues like the Arab-Israeli conflict. 

They operate on an international scale through providing a platform for member states to come together and work on global issues. 

Ex; general assembly, security council, economic and social council, international court of justice, trusteeship council and UN secretariat.

The United Nations is divided into 248 countries and territories. There are 22 geographical subregions and two intermediary regions.

There are divisions based on language. Ex: Arabic division, Baltic division

Countries are divided amongst 6 continental regions. 

The point of the UN is to actively collaborate with other countries around the globe to work towards peace and international security. 

There are certain areas in the UN where they focus a little extra due to ongoing conflict. 

Some examples would be in Africa countries like Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya have been affected by severe droughts and famine. The UN provides food aid and agricultural programs to help. 

The UN is actively growing, so attention shifts to wherever it's most prioritized. If we look at when this non-state actor was first founded, we will notice that the focus was on reconstruction after World War II. Today, the UN focuses on things like climate change and the refugee crisis. 

Most local communities and governments are in support of the UN’s efforts. 

For example, Model UN is a national organization and educational tool used in many high schools internationally to enforce leadership and public speaking skills.
