Bessie Smith became known as the "Empress of the Blues" and has influenced musicians such as Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin, and Janis Joplin. She has also been the topic of many movies and plays especially those surrounding the circumstances of her death and was recently played by Queen Latifah in a biopic. Smith's music immortalized "the frustrations and hopes of a whole generation of black Americans" (Bessie Smith Britannica) during the Harlem Renaissance.

"Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," written by Jimmie Cox, became one of Bessie Smith's greatest hits of all time. The song was written in 1923, five years after World War I, and right at the peak of the Roaring Twenties. Though the song was written in the face of all the optimism, it exposes the erratic nature of prosperity and wealth, and urges listeners to be more cautious with their possessions. Bessie Smith sings:

Once I lived the life of a millionaire
Spendin' my money, I didn't care
I carried my friends out for a good time
Buying bootleg liquor, champagne and wine,
Then I began to fall so low
I didn't have a friend and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again
I'm gonna hold on to it till them eagle's grin
Nobody knows you
When you're down and out
In my pocket not one penny
And my friends, I haven't any...

Composed in 1922 by American jazz singer Alberta Hunter, and fellow musician Love Austin, "Down Hearted Blues" was released as Bessie Smith's first single. The song immediately became a hit, with around 780,000 copies sold in the first six months of the songs release, and eventually two million copies sold in total. The lyrics of the first few lines of the song are as follows:

Gee, but it's hard to love someone
When that someone don't love you
I'm so disgusted, heartbroken, too
I've got those down-hearted blues...

The song tells the story of a woman who has lost the love of her life, and shows how fragile and rare love is. It exposes listeners to the woman's feelings of utter heartbreak. The ideas presented by this song fit unsurprisingly with those of the 1920's American Blues.
