Most of the things that he touches on in the video, we have embedded in our statement. The idea that we are working together, communicating, making, listening, speaking...these are all things that will give all students better outcomes. This connects to our mission statement because all of our classrooms are crafting lessons in which the students are doing all the heavy lifting and the teacher is there to guide in case anybody leads astray.

Our mission statement of allowing our students to read, write, listen, speak and make each day will encourage them to strive to be the best they can be and give them a chance to see their growth and in turn give them the confidence they need to succeed. Once they see how much they have grown, it will push them to work even harder.

Remember the struggle of not being able to show your talents? Remember what it was like sitting at your desk for how many hours? Wasn't that terrible? Remember how boring some of the teachers were and did not provide you with opportunities to explore, inquire and even have a little fun. Well, maybe, had us cellar dwellers been able to explore an outdoor lab, build robots, explore space, nurture baby chics, sell apples and dream of flying . . . at least our children are getting academic justice. And to connect with writing . . . did we even write "back in the olden times?" Not where I came from. So, to keep our kids from being embarrassed in H.S., they must WRITE! I have tried to shift my class as much as possible into a child centered place. Ten minutes of basic instruction and then (hopefully) the remainder of the time helping/coaching. With the current schedule (one class/week) it makes it so that by the end of the week- I'm saying nothing- the students are sharing, and supporting each other, I'm only needed for the big issues. He speaks about how, in order to be more effective, we cannot look at changing the child, however, our approach to the way we teach the child. Our mission statement alleges that children will have the opportunity to speak- verbally express themselves so that they can feel understood, acknowledged, and appreciated. It states that children will listen. This is a dying art- in order to listen effectively we as teachers must teach and model HOW this is to be done. Listening involves so much more than hearing, and is a first step to mutual respect and understanding. How validated someone feels when their expressions are truly heard- whether or not they are agreed with. This validation leads to resilience and self confidence, something we are trying to build in our students. Our mission statement says that our children will make everyday. Making provides a kinesthetic outlet to visually demonstrate comprehension, along with a way to express creativity which develops pride and ownership in our children. The mission says children will read daily. This is absolutely essential in vocabulary development, spelling acumen, visualization, you name it this portion of the mission alone will have a massive impact on our kids especially if they don't have the opportunity to read at home. Our statement says that they will write everyday. This is such an imprtant charge as written communication appears to be a dying art, however, it is still an essential form of expression and one that all educated people will have to be able to use no matter where they go in life.
