Dickens explored poverty, social inequality and economic hardship, chronicling the lives of the working classes and social injustice.

His stories are often set in large English cities, particularly London, which serves as the backdrop for many of his most famous works, such as “Oliver Twist” and “David Copperfield”.

In 1823, Charles Dickens' family moved to a degraded suburb of London. However, the following year Dickens' father was imprisoned due to unpaid debts. Because of this, at the age of only twelve, Charles Dickens had to work in a shoe polish factory. This phase of his life was extremely painful and his experiences during that period were often reflected in his literary works.

A few years later he went to work in a law firm, taught himself to take shorthand and became a journalist. He collaborated with several newspapers and magazines

Most poor families lived in small, dirty houses. They didn’t have enough food, clean water, or doctors.

Many children had to work from a young age. They worked in factories, cleaned chimneys, or sold things in the streets. The work was very hard and dangerous.

Some poor people lived in places called “workhouses.” They got food and a place to sleep, but they had to work a lot. Life in the workhouse was very sad and unfair
