#1) The government has secrets and information that it keeps from its citizens in order to maintain power.
Evidence: In the story, party doesn't tell the citizens that the war is actually fake and that they are the ones dropping the bombs on the proles. Also, the party doesn't mention what has happened in the past to any of the citizens and is constantly changing history in order to make sure the Party is never wrong.
#2) No matter what limitations or rules society places on its citizens, they will eventually rebel.
Evidence: Winston knows that he isn't allowed to have a diary, and that he could have to endure a strict punishment if anyone finds out. Also, O'Brien leads Julia and Winston to join the Brotherhood in order to rebel against the party, knowing that they could be caught at any moment.
#3) Without individualism, society would never advance because no one would have new ideas for innovations.
Evidence: Because no one is allowed to think of new ideas and is restricted by the rules of society, there are no new technological advances. Also, everyone in the society is the same and because of this, they are stuck in an endless loop in time repeating itself.

1984 relates to communism in history. This with communism in the Soviet Union, Stalin was a powerful dictator. He ruled by fear and enforced strict communism. This caused the government to become very powerful and the citizens to fear their government. Communism and rule under Stalin is very similar to 1984 because in both instances, there is totalitarian government and citizens that don't have any control.

Fiction Text: Anthem

The book Anthem by Ayn Rand has very similar ideas to those expressed in 1984. This is because, in Anthem, individualism is also taken away due to the totalitarian form of government. Equality 7-2521 is the main character, and has to conceal his intelligence and writing. He cannot stand out from his peers because the idea of collectivism is strongly enforced.

I would recommend this book because it gives you an insight as to how influential a government is on its people. 1984 warns us about what could happen when a group of power hungry people seize control. I think it's important for people to read this book because it offers a new perspective on life and demonstrates how important individualism is to society.

What I liked:
I liked the dystopian and futuristic theme to this book. From the telescreens to the torture devices, I found it interesting to see what the author would envision our future society as if we let totalitarianism take over.
What I didn't like:
I didn't enjoy the characters of this book. I feel like the reader is unable to connect with the characters because they aren't very remarkable. Also, I think the beginning of the book was slow.

What can we learn from this?

We can learn a lot from this text. Perhaps most importantly, individualism is essential. In 1984, almost all sense of individualism is gone. People don't think for themselves and are unable to express their own opinions. Because of this, everyone becomes the same which halts the progress of the society. No new technological advances develop and the society seems to just freeze in time. Also, from this book, we can learn that totalitarianism governments are unsuccessful. This is because no matter what, citizens will rebel against the government.
