In the written play and the movie, Romeo and Juliet suffer the consequences of their families arguments. Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love with each other but aren't able to pursue it to their full ability. Since the Capulets are fighting with the Montagues, Romeo would be forbidden from seeing Juliet if the families knew. Even though the fight between the two families isn't Romeo or Juliet's fault, they still experience the struggles of war and it's consequences. The two of them being separated caused the two children to go to great lengths to fake Juliet's death. Therefore, the conflict/war brought the two lovers to their death all because of the Capulets and the Montagues were disgusted with each other. The two families soon came together after seeing their two most loved people dead all because they were from different families who hated each other.

In today's society, we still haven't learned much from war. All that we've "learned" is how to use bigger and more destructive weapons. Lots of people, whether average law-abiding citizens or formal politicians believe that war will only develop for the worse. During the Civil War men in battle only had cannons, less powerful guns, and swords. They also didn't have vehicles to carry them from place to place in a shorter amount of time. They mostly used horses and trains to get around faster. Nowadays we have high powered weapons and vehicles that do devastating work on people and places around them. Many innocent people get harmed because of war and conflict, but not many actions are being done to prevent people from being attacked or harmed. All people see is winners and losers in the eyes of war. Just like in Romeo and Juliet, a war between families or countries will have consequences. People don't really think of the consequences until you get a letter from the army saying that your loved one died in battle. People are blind from seeing the pain and struggle people go through for their families and country to do what's right.

In the story, Romeo and Juliet suffer the consequences of their families' war. Despite having fallen in love with each other, they would be broken apart if the Capulets and Montagues discovered their relationship. This eventually leads to Romeo being separated from Juliet after he had slain Tybalt. In order for Juliet to find a way to see her husband again, she takes a potion given to her by the Friar Lawrence, who had married the two of them. This potion puts Juliet into a deep sleep that makes her appear dead. At Juliet's "funeral" Romeo's friend, Balthazar, saw Juliet dead and delivered false information to Romeo. Romeo, in a panic, bought a potion that would allow him to kill himself. However, he refused to die without being beside his wife. Since Romeo didn't know that Juliet was just asleep, he drank the potion and ended his life in the tomb. When Juliet woke up to find her husband dead, she used his dagger and took her own life. The families found her and Romeo next to each other and the furious prince forced the two families to make up, for their quarrels had taken the lives of Romeo and Juliet. War today has the same consequences, people who are not directly responsible still suffer from the hatred towards the other. Innocent people, like Romeo and Juliet, may end up dead because of terrorist attacks, yet in this situation, despite the numerous deaths caused by war, it is not over until one side declares victory.

Will War Ever End?

Despite people saying they've learned from previous wars, we still continue to fight and allow casualties to happen. We have apparently learned from the Holocaust and created morals that all people should be treated equally, yet we fight and refuse to bring about peace all throughout the world. In Benedetta Berti's article on TED Fellows, she says, "When do wars end? The history books I studied in school offered a clear answer to this question: Wars end after a bloody confrontation on the battlefield resulted in a crushing defeat for one warring party and a resounding victory for the other." My question for this is: Why does war have to end only after people have died and suffered great losses? In the Romeo and Juliet story, the two families only stop fighting after they discover Romeo and Juliet died for each other. What is even more concerning is that after the war has ended and people have died, the two sides sign a treaty and everything goes back to normal, forgetting about basically wasted lives of the fallen soldiers. The author says that war and signing a treaty does not necessarily mark the end of a conflict but rather the beginning of one. Modern wars tear societies apart, causing more division and conflict between countries down to the people. This is just like Romeo and Juliet's story where the Montagues and Capulets are fighting with each other and causes division and conflict between the two families. Individuals fight with each other based on their different beliefs, but why should differences be fought over? Armed war doesn't help this dilemma of who's side to take. Fighting and killing can provoke people to keep fighting for what they only think is correct in their eyes. Both sides of a war have their opinions, yet the bloodshed and focus on protecting lives takes away the real solution, compromise. If societies are getting torn apart because of war, finding ways to compromise is even more difficult. Modern wars are much harder to end and solve, due to the greater threats that nuclear weapons provide. The only way to solve war and regain peace is for the authorities to step up and solve their quarrels, giving their citizens no reason to fight since if the leaders don't have conflict, they have no need to fight for their lives. However, many people in power of countries focus on being the ones to win rather than letting both sides claim the victory.
https://fellowsblog.ted.com/why-dont-modern-wars-end-63d32f7f29b4

For centuries children and mankind have been surrounded by war. (http://www.pij.org/details.php?id=498) Today, in the Middle East children are surrounded by the sounds of screaming and gunfire, this scars them knowing that they could soon die or even their families. In 2016, over 5,000 children were killed in the middle east, also, over 400,000 children were 'malnourished' which means they were not fed the proper nutrients to remain healthy. (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jan/16/yemen-war-children-dead-injured-malnourished) Down in the middle east, children are scarred by war, just like Romeo and Juliet were. They were caved in and couldn't go anywhere because Romeo's family was too busy hating the Capulets, while Juliet's family were hating the Montagues.
