Such an appearance would be attributed to a rough night and as her family thinks of reasons along the lines of "...constant diets to maintain her figure..." or perhaps having a tremendous hangover. Without inquiring more they attempt to continue breakfast until Carmen attempts to share her nightmarish dream. As she is sharing, her family tries sympathize telling her it is only a trivial matter and nothing to worry about. However, sympathy is not empathy and they have no understanding, much like the reader and as Carmen kept spilling out her nightmare her family only grew more puzzled.
