Scene: Two students, Alex and Jamie, are sitting in the school library, working on their history homework assignment.

Alex: Hey Jamie, have you figured out how to use Instagram for our history homework yet?

Jamie: Yeah, I did. Do you need help with it?

Alex: Definitely. I have no idea where to start.

Jamie: No worries. First, we need to look for primary sources about social movements. Open Instagram and go to the search bar.

Alex: Got it. What should I type in?

Jamie: Try typing in hashtags related to your topic. For example, if you're researching the Civil Rights Movement, type in #CivilRights, #MLK, or #SelmaMarch.

Alex: Okay, I’ll start with #CivilRights. [Alex types in the hashtag and scrolls through the results.] I see a lot of photos and some videos. What exactly should I be looking for?

Jamie: Look for posts that have historical photos, personal stories, or detailed captions. Those are the ones that might have useful information.

Alex: Alright. I found a post with a photo of the Selma March and a long caption about the event. Should I screenshot this?

Jamie: Yes, take a screenshot of the post, including the caption. Make sure you also note the username and the date of the post.

Alex: Done. What’s next?

Jamie: Create a folder on your phone or computer to keep all these screenshots organized. Name each file something descriptive so you can find them easily later.

Alex: Good idea. I’ll name this one “SelmaMarch_HistoricalPhoto.” Should I keep looking for more?

Jamie: Yes, try to find a few more. Also, remember to check out the accounts posting these images. Sometimes they have more useful posts or stories in their highlights.

Alex: Okay, I found another post about Martin Luther King Jr. giving a speech. This one has a lot of likes and comments.

Jamie: Perfect. Screenshot that one too. We can use the comments to get different perspectives and personal stories.

Alex: Got it. How do we cite these posts in our homework?

Jamie: For citations, include the username, the date of the post, the caption, and the URL. Here’s an example format:

"@historyaccount (2024, May 25). Caption of the post. Retrieved from [URL]."

Alex: Makes sense. I’ll make sure to save the URLs too. This is actually pretty interesting. Thanks for the help, Jamie.

Jamie: No problem! Let me know if you need any more help. We can compare notes later to make sure we have a good range of sources.

Alex: Will do. This should make our project a lot more engaging. Thanks again!

Jamie: Anytime! Happy researching!
