This public artwork is located on the campus of Stanford University. It's titled "Oy/Yo" and created by artist, Deborah Kass 2019 . It's displayed outside the Anderson Collection. The first time I saw it, it made me smile. I love the bold and bright yellow color and the large size of this sculpture. It's human sized. The word "Yo" can be read from one side and "Oy" can be read from the other side. It's irreverent and humorous. I like how this artwork engages the public, that people take selfies in front of it and pose beside it. Some people frame their faces inside the O. From the Cantor website I found the following description, "OY/YO explores the combination of imagery and language: “oy,” as in “oy vey,” is a Yiddish term of fatigue, resignation or woe; “yo,” is a greeting associated with African American slang. In addition, “yo” in Spanish means “I.” Each usage has been co-opted in popular culture. “The fact that this particular work resonates so beautifully in so many languages to so many communities is why I wanted to make it monumental,” Kass told the New York Times.

It was created by artist Tigre Bailando of L.A. It was installed in June 2019. It is set to be removed soon because Fremont rotates Public Art displays. From my observations it looks like it made of curved steel pipes and includes three faces and four arms. This sculpture is really creative and can hold a lot of meaning behind it depending on the way you view it. This 21-foot-tall transdimensional being represents an immortal who watches over all of humanity. The Solacii has witnessed the entirety of human history with deep empathy.

1. The sculpture has an opening in the middle for guests to stand in the middle and take pictures. From what I read online the artist says, "The inner space serves as a sanctuary for people to gather, talk, and support each other." This means to me that no matter what emotion you are feeling, mad, sad, happy, etc. It is okay to feel those feelings and you are appreciated no matter what.

2. Definitely the gold painted hands and faces. The gold isn't hard to miss and as well as the height of the statue. It is very tall and can be seen easily.

3. An emotion I felt was, "wow this statue is really tall." I appreciated the center of it being open for people to take pictures. That kind of represented to me like "everyone is welcome here."

4. The only thing I am not too fond of with the artwork is the faces. I'm not to keen on the way the faces look, it's a little bit creepy to me. But I can look passed that because I do see a creative part to this sculpture.

5. It reminded me of this show I used to watch as a kid, called "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends." And the statue reminded me of this one character specifically who was called "Spiderus" it's actually a creepy looking spider. Not sure why it reminded me of it, I think maybe the faces and the hands? Interesting observations.

What does the art work means to you? The artwork means to me that it is memories. I remember my grandmother taking me here to the tech museum when I was a kid with my brother. Everything reminds me my brother as he just passed away two months ago. Now as an adult I take my son here and my baby son as well. Haven’t been in a while but it’s definitely a piece of art in my eyes. Watching the balls go down and turn in all the different technique that it does is interesting to me and it’s been there since I was a kid. What attracted you to the artwork? What attracted me is how fun it is to watch. It actually moves and does things. I like to watch the motions and the way that it moves. My grandma used to always take us to go look at art and to me I honestly thought it was boring but this is something that for me was interesting at a young age. What kind of emotions did it bring about? The emotions it brings is love because I can share it with my children as it was shared with me when I was a child. When I showed them when they were younger I was excited because it’s a memory for me.What do you like or dislike about the artwork? I can’t say that there’s anything I dislike as it looks like a big fan machine that moves around and is made perfectly for weight of the balls to move down and up and around.Be specific.Did the artwork remind you of anything?I think the artwork remind me of like a gumball machine or some kind of pinball machine of some sort. It reminded me of a toy and I love seeing something so interestingly made.

This artwork is in downtown San Jose. It is called Quetzalcoatl, and it was made by Robert Graham. This artwork has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I remember not being able to distinguish what it was when I first saw it. I was not able to see where it started and where it ended. Besides this artwork representing my culture, this artwork has become a part of my childhood. My attraction to this artwork has changed with time. The very first time I saw this artwork as a little girl what attracted me was the big snake face on top of the rock. As an adult my attraction has changed. Now what attracts me is the meaning it has to my culture, and the detail in the snake’s face, the way each line turns into a feather. The first emotions this artwork brought about, was confusion. As I grew older my emotions changed to, pride, and admiration. What I like about this artwork is the details. The way that each line turns into a feather. The first time this artwork reminded me of a rock, as an adult it reminds me of my childhood. This artwork reminds me of every Christmas Quetzalcoatl being at the end of our Christmas in the park walk.

This is a photo I took when I visited Portland a few years back. I'm not sure who painted it or the name of the artwork but this mural is unforgettable to me. The artwork reminds me of the first and only time I visited this city and some of the greatest things I can remember is the huge bookstore we visited called Powels and amazind donuts. What attracted me to this artwork is the vibrant colors used to blend the whole mural together even though there is many seperate elements to this piece. Some of the emotions it brought out when I first saw it was excitement, joy and overall being in awe of the people who brought this painting to life and from their imagination. Some of the things I like about this mural is the diversity and how a variety of different elements come together as one. The artwork reminded me of something we did in elementary school which was when our whole class made a mural by working together and eventually all came together to showcase a rainforest.

Name of the Artist: Stefania Gueorguieva

1. What does the art work means to you?

I chose this specific piece of artwork because this image reminds me of myself, when I was a little girl. This painting is located on South Market St - to the left of the road, while driving. Looking at this photo brought back memories that I once had, playing at these water fountains during the hot summer days.

2. What attracted you to the artwork?
What attracted me to this piece was where it is specifically located at. Behind this painting, there is a water fountain in which the city puts on for several days during the summer, for children to come and play. This is where I would come as a little girl with my mom and grandparents. They would bring me here to the fountains, and I would run through the water, and play along with other kids. This was one of my favorite places to come and stay cool!

3. What kind of emotions did it bring about?
The emotions that this artwork piece brought out in me was both pure happiness and sadness. Happiness in the sense that I was always having fun in the water at a young age at this location, but sadness because my grandparents would bring me here as well, as stated above. My grandparents left this world several years ago, but to think that at one point in time, they brought me here after school, on the weekends, and whenever I needed a cool-down from the sun. Many good memories were held here while I was a little girl. And to have this artwork located right on the side of where this water fountain is at, just brings these emotions out to me. Both happiness and sadness. But they were always once, and always will be, great memories.

4. What do you like or dislike about the artwork? Be specific.
As far as liking this photo, I would have to say that I like everything possible that there is to see in this painting. You see a little girl looking at her own reflection through the water. You can see that she is having fun, and it seems as if this was possibly during the Fall time? As there are Fall leaves shown scattered, and floating on the water. She is also wearing rain boots. So I enjoy how this painting is detailed as it brings out a happy and fun time. As for disliking, there isn't anything that I do not like about this painting. This piece of artwork is beautiful and makes my heart fill with joy.

5. Did the artwork remind you of anything?
As mentioned above (for Q's 1-3), this artwork reminded me of my childhood. This painting is located right on the side of where these water fountains are at. It was not painted several streets down, or in a random location. It was painted right where these actual fountains are. I have photos that were taken of me playing in these water fountains and this was a fun place for me to come and play in the water. As I see this little girl in this painting, I also see myself. I see myself as that little girl. Just living a fun, careless childhood. Where nothing else mattered in this world but having fun. And having my family there to take me, and create such precious moments with me.

Thank You,
Karina Rojas

"Song of Santa Cruz" is a huge public mural painted on the side of downtown Santa Cruz's Petroglyph. James Aschacher is a local artist who has done other public paintings for the city of Santa Cruz. His medium is acrylic paint, and this mural is just that. This art piece as been around for as long as I can remember. It's been a part of my childhood summers but I never truly appreciated it until now. I feel nostalgic and actually quite sad. The "Song of Santa Cruz" has become a whisper to the place I once knew. The bright colors, rollercoaster, boats, and lighthouse - all bring up memories of the summers I've spent there. I loved this mural due to the perfect but simplistic representation of West Side Santa Cruz but it brought me profound sadness because that city is longer. I also discovered John Aschacher likes to add a boarder of interesting symbols around his painting - for no apparent reason besides catching the audience's attention. I enjoy when artists don't have a deep meaning but just create something purely for aesthetic purposes. It just brings the "art world" down to earth. Art doesn't have to be as serious as people make it. Sometimes its just for fun.

sources: https://localwiki.org/santacruz/James_Carl_Aschbacher
https://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/wm524D_Song_of_Santa_Cruz_Mural__Santa_Cruz_Californa

This mural is located in downtown San Jose on San Carlos St., and is titled “Alebrijes 2020”. The artist who created this is Francisco Franco, and was assisted by artists Steven Reece, Joaquin Garcia, and Marco Bazalar. The first time I saw this mural I was completely taken back, like it quite literally took my breath away. Alebrije artwork is known for its bold striking colors with whimsical designs and patterns, which is what first attracted me to this mural. The word “Alebrije” is Spanish and can be defined as “whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects, and imaginary creatures painted with intense colors and intricate patterns.” This type of folklore art is very popular in Oaxaca Mexico which happens to be where my dad is from, so this connects to me on a personal level. I love the intense detail created by the floral and plant patterns, as well as the different animals such as the jaguar at the bottom and the hummingbirds in the center. The emotions that I felt were joy and amazement. I felt joyous when I saw the mural, because it felt like my culture was being represented in the brightest way. The mural to me means celebration. It also seems to be honoring the old lady pictured in the center of the potted agave plant, in the hand of the woman to the right. It reminds me of an ofrenda, which is an altar for those who have passed on. I hope you can all appreciate this beautiful mural that shows a piece of my culture!
https://uknowledge.uky.edu/world_mexico_alebrijes/

Sensing You” is a great artwork that, to me, means that the light is reflecting off the people and the cars walking and/or driving past it. Everytime a motion is detected under the bridge the lights change color and keep on changing colors all throughout the night. What attracted me to this artwork is actually the lights and the way they change colors at night. Even just the paintings of the circles change colors too because the LED lights around it reflect off of it. This artwork gives me a sense of comfort and excitement because it reminds me of the times when I was in the back seat as a child driving through downtown looking at all of the art work, but this specific bridge and lights always had gotten my attention with excitement. And now seeing it while I am driving through downtown as an adult, it gives me a sense of comfort. However, I dislike how the bridge is simply not wide enough to be able to see the artwork for a longer period of time because driving by it 30 to 35 miles per hour does not give me enough time to enjoy it.

Personally the artwork above is close to home because it relates to my culture and my ancestors. It also is a reminder of a really nice day I had with my friend back in 2019 when we went to see an indigenous festival in San Fransisco. I remember all the vivid colors and the beautiful music. There was even a little market at the end of the parade where you could purchase jewelry from independent indigenous merchants and the jewelry was absolutely beautiful! I found this artwork along the walk to the parade so it was kind of like a hidden treasure for me because I had never seen it before and it was on a hill somewhere deep in a park pretty hidden which made me wonder "why?" because it's so beautiful. I guess another thing that attracted me to it was that the mural was painted on top of a hill and you could see a good portion of the city from up there so it really added to the experience. When I look back at the mural it makes me feel happy despite all the injustice my ancestors and other Native Americans went through I'm glad that there is a way to remember their beauty through amazing and colorful murals. It makes me feel proud that in one way or another I am connected to these past beautiful beings. One thing I really like about the artwork is how colorful it is. I usually don't really care for bright pops of color, but something about it makes it feel like a bright, childlike spirit and you can't get enough! as for what I didn't like is that I couldn't fit the whole mural into one picture! The artwork reminded me a whole lot about my appreciation for my culture and where I came from. It reminded me of how bright Native Americans are and how beautiful our culture is despite all the negativity that surrounds it, we manage to keep it alive. As for the artist of the mural I unfortunately don't know, but I do know it's located in San Fransisco near Market St!

What attracted you to the artwork? The thing that attracted me from the artwork was the medicine logo because the healthcare worker are the one that have given there all during this endless pandemic. The artwork was painted at nearby bridge by my neighborhood it says GRACIAS TRABAJADORES ESENCIALES which means thank you essential workers. Also a lot of essential workers gave up their time without their families to bring food to the table and provide our daily meals. All health care and essential workers have given their whole lives just to keep everyone safe during this pandemic. The artwork definitely reminded me of how strong we are as essential workers and healthcare workers it reminded me of why I keep pursuing for my nursing career. This artwork definitely lift my attention to see the rough time we are going thru, the seriousness of this virus of how it made people stronger and some even lost battles with this deadly virus. It definitely a very good way to demonstrate that the community is really thankful for everyone being in the front lines.

The art piece I choose is a light sculpture made by Brian Brush, called Voxel Cloud. This Sculpture is located in Downtown San Jose on top of The Pierce apartments. It can be seen from the 280 freeway. This art sculpture means a lot to me because it is so pretty and anything with colorful lights attracts me. It makes me feel so happy every time I see it and I wish I could see it more often as I don't drive on that freeway too much. I remember seeing the sculpture during the daytime and was wondering why there were weird metal shapes that look like waves on top of the building. Even though the lights weren't on it still caught my attention because it was something different. It wasn't until I drove by it during the night time and was super amazed at how beautiful the lights looked. What I loved the most was that the lights would change colors. What I didn't like was that I couldn't slow down to just stare at it for a longer time. I wonder if there is another way to see it other than the freeway. This light sculpture reminds me of being at a festival and seeing all the colorful lights around me. It also reminds me of all the colorful light things I have in my room like my keyboard and the lights behind the tv. I can't wait to see this light sculpture again as it is rare for me to see but one of these nights I will drive just to go see it.

The picture included is not my picture as it would be hard to take a photo while driving so here is the link as well as other photos of the light sculpture.
http://www.brianbrush.com/voxel-cloud

This artwork means to me how an artist feels and what he tries to make the public see through his creation. Also the expression and creativity that the artist has to create this mural in a public park is something that would be admirable. I feel attracted to this artwork by the colors and all the details that this mural. Other art that i admire and feel attracted by the details that have the artwork with chalk that all the artists create at the park every year. I have different emotions when I see the art that they create on the floor. Some of them bring me memories from my childhood and some others bring me memories from my country. Overall I feel inpress and I have a deep respect for all the artists that make time to create these beautiful paintings at a public space where we can all enjoy them. From most of the artwork that is displayed at the park I like the colors and all the details that they have. Most of them look very realistic and they even look like they are alive. One of the artwork that they displayed at the park was the paint of the earth. It reminded me of when I was in school and we were learning about the planets and how far the earth is from the sun.

Title of Artwork: Soaring Flight

Artist of Artwork: Kent Roberts (2008)

What attracted you to the artwork?

I pass this work of art at least once a week on my way to various activities. Originally, I was attracted to it out of curiosity, for I did not know the reason behind the structure. I discovered an informational plaque (pictured above) beside the artwork that explained how John Joseph Montgomery used the hills around Evergreen Park to make important experiments with heavier-than-air gliders. With peaked interest, I searched for more information about Montgomery and the work of art that is next to the plaque about him. I learned that the work of art is called Soaring Flight and was built to commemorate Montgomery’s trailblazing work in aeronautics. Located on the outskirts of Evergreen Park in San Jose, CA, Soaring Flight is composed of two parts: a 30-foot-tall steel representation of a glider wing that is sticking vertically out of a concrete plaza, and lines that cross the concrete plaza in a pattern around the upright wing that mimics the airflow pattern around a glider wing in flight.

What does the artwork mean to you?

Understanding the origins of Soaring Flight has helped me understand the importance of this work of art for the Evergreen and San Jose communities, as well as for the science of aeronautics. Whenever I see Soaring Flight, I think about the influence Montgomery’s work had on the flying machines, which have become so useful in our everyday lives. Thus, to me, this work of art represents the powerful impact that the area where I live has had on the world.

What kind of emotions did it bring about?

Each time I see Soaring Flight, I am filled with pride that a member of my community has contributed something valuable to humanity. I am also filled with excitement and anticipation about what I can do, as a member of my community, to contribute something meaningful to those around me.

What do you like or dislike about the artwork? Be specific.

On the ground around the structure of the glider wing, one can find inspirational phrases relating to the artwork. I particularly liked this feature, as the uplifting messages convey both the past accomplishments of the community and the future possibilities for the community. One phrase I found (pictured above) is an excellent example of this: “John J. Montgomery represents the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of the people of this region.” This phrase refers to the past accomplishments of Montgomery as an illustration of what is possible from the Evergreen and San Jose communities in the future.

Did the artwork remind you of anything?

While reading about Montgomery, I learned that he died from injuries in a crash landing during one of his test flights on a hill by this artwork. (That hill, which is behind Evergreen Valley College, is now known as “Montgomery Hill.”) Thus, Soaring Flight, which was built to honor Montgomery, reminds me of other works of art that were built to honor influential members of communities. (A famous example of this is the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.)

Soaring Flight and John J. To me this artwork means strength, power, and memories. Horses to me are powerful animals with lots of strength. This artwork created happiness to me because it reminded me of the time I went to Mexico for the first time back in 2019. I was able to ride a horse also for the first time which allowed me to create fun memories with my family.

What attracted me to this artwork was the size and the way the horse is standing with his head firm and high.

I chose the Voladores de Papantla as a piece of art because I want to exhibit an art piece of which I am proud of as a Veracruzana, however, this is not a usual piece of art like paintings or statues, I preferred to demonstrate another kind of art. Dance is also an art because it is a beautiful form of expression and it is a tradition.
The background story of the Voladores de Papantla is very fascinating, especially because it is an ancient art that is still performed to this day.
The Voladores de Papantla or also called "Birds of the Earth" is a millenary ritual associated with fertility that Totonac natives performed year after year. ... The ceremony of the Voladores de Papantla is also considered one of the most beautiful traditions that exist in the region of Papantla de Olarte and Veracruz.
This dance appeals to me because it is not a usual dance that can be seen today. Also because it is a traditional dance as I said but other than that it is because these people literally fly like birds. They are not afraid of having to tie one foot on the pole which is very high and have to jump and let themselves be carried away by the music.
The emotions I had when I saw this for the first time were fear, admiration and happiness because they continue to represent our ancestors. I didn't understand the meaning behind it until my mom explained it to me. I was about 5 years old when this beautiful show took place.
What I liked about this art is that the people who were up there had the courage to dare to do such a thing, I also liked that they wore traditional costumes and lastly that they honored their ancestors. What I didn't like is that it is a risky dance and you never know what accident could happen.
Seeing and researching more about this brought back a lot of memories that I thought I would never remember and it brings back a little more of Veracruz.

This artwork is by Lila Gemellos named EastridgeMurals because it is located at Eastridge shopping mall. You can see more of the artist murals by entering the tag name @GemellosMurals online. I chose this artwork because this is the mall that I go to the most. I feel happy even before I enter the mall because of the pop of color it brings to the streets of San Jose. I love how this public art is free for anyone to take pictures in front of. It showcases the bright city of San Jose as well has the hills of San Jose City. The emotions that it brought to me is that every time I see it, I feel happy and proud that San Jose is where I live and how beautiful the city is if we look within. I love how colorful the artwork is and that it brings brightness to the dull mall walls. The murals also has a saying "Heart of Silicon Valley" which when I take a picture with it with all my friends and family, I feel that it is my home and I am representing it. The mural reminds me of how free spirited the City of San Jose is.

What does the art work means to you?

This art piece means to always try to remain positive. It is kind of like a reminder to o be happy or se Feliz and smile and go about your day. This image was taken in Mexico so I think it means that although times can be hard it shouldn't stop you from being happy for the things you have. Better day will come.

What attracted you to the artwork?

The colors was the first thing the attracted the eye and the more I looked at it the more I got to see how the artist made the letter e include an eye. I thought that was pretty cool. Looking at the image the letter e looks like a face thats smiling which also go with the saying of be happy. Overall the color makes the letters pop out more. Also the mural contains my favorite type of colors like light pink and light blue.

What kind of emotions did it bring about?

I felt happiness for sure. Being around with my family that I don't see a lot seen often made me feel warm inside. Its a pretty mural with all the colors. It made me think about all the things the people living there go through but they are still happy with that they have and the place they live in.

What do you like or dislike about the artwork? Be specific.

The only thing I don't like about the artwork is the placement of the piece. It was kind hidden in an alley. The only reason why I was able to see it was because it was across from the parking lot. I really like the colors and the detail of the eyes. I also liked the heart on the side it gives it more detail to the mural.

Did the artwork remind you of anything?

This piece was taken in Mexico. Mexico is my happy place so seeing a mural that says “Se Feliz” which translates to “Be Happy” made me come to a realization that Mexico is a place I can cherish and call home because whenever I am there I truly do feel happy and stress free. This was also a year before my little cousin from Mexico passed away. And we went together to the Pueblo and it just reminds me of all the happy moments we got to spend together before he passed away.

This is actually part of an even larger mural I discovered as I researched online after taking this picture in Oakland. It was started in 2015 by two Oakland based artists Ernest Doty and Ryan Montoya. The other portion of the wall actually includes a Native American man holding peyote with laser beams coming out of his eyes. Doty completed the alien portion of the wall while Montoya handled the side with the Native American. I was actually on the freeway when I seen the piece and had to circle back to capture a picture of it. When I seen it, I was definitely intrigued. It has a psychedelic theme which caught my eye right away. The whole piece comes together very well in my opinion, the colors pop out due to the darker colors so they contrast nicely. I feel like it gives me a glimpse into what a psychedelic trip might look like. And the background of the two subjects is extremely well blended, it reminds me of both sunsets and outer space. All in all, definitely a fan of this kind of artwork. I actually found out Ernest Doty has a social media page where I also found Ryan Montoya, so I’ll be following whatever else they’ll be creating in the future now.

While visiting a friend in Oakland in July 2021, we decided to walk around downtown, and I was struck by how much murals were. Despite being in the Bay Area for more than half of my life, I never ventured to Oakland's Chinatown. This piece in particular was stunning in its size and the symbolism of minorities working together to make Oakland the city that it is, despite gentrification efforts. The mural has realism and surrealism elements that explains much of its purpose and intentions without needing words. Having lived in San Jose since late 2010, the biggest problems I have with San Jose are the lack of visual history and an absence of identity that other big cities have. Also, being a Black man in San Jose, it is both surreal and comforting that Oakland has a sizable Black community, and one can feel that just walking through the city.

This artwork reminds me of my trips to downtown San Jose every Sunday morning. The appreciation that both my mom and I have for this piece as well because we both found a mutual admiration for this art and always happen to comment on it as soon as we pass it by. So this mural to me conveys a memory that was made and a memory that will always remain.

I think what attracted me to this artwork were not just how the colors are placed, but by the stern look of her face and the hand almost being directed towards anyone who passes. I mentioned color placement. I really like that black and white was used and a pop of only 2 colors: blue as the background and her eyes and red for her lips and earring.

The emotions that this artwork brought about were both intimidation & empowerment and although they contradict I find it interesting that these were both of the emotions I felt, but I think it's because I know who is being portrayed and what she stood for. For anyone who is unfamiliar with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she recently passed away as of last year and was the second female justice of the United States supreme court. She stood for gender equality and women's rights which is why I appreciate this piece a lot more.

There's nothing I really dislike about this artwork, but possibly the confusion it brought me when I saw it in person again and really paid attention and realized that she might not be gesturing, but rather touching her face in a thinking like motion. What I really like though is various lines on her face which make me think they were intentionally trying to show her mature age and added this detail to reflect that.

This artwork reminded me a bit of pop art, but that tends to be a lot more colorful and includes polka dots sometimes.

This art mural is located in Mexico Lindo on Race street in San Jose. Currently to my knowledge it has no official name. I was driving late at night and the moment I saw it, it drew me in. I found it so beautiful and memorable. This art is fairly new as it was added in June of this year. I’m going to be honest not a lot of art speaks or draws me in but this piece just left me in awe. The artist's name is Cova and he does lots of different street art. While I look at this piece it gives me the emotions of happiness and pride. This represents Mexican pride as this is a classic Catrina. I love the colors they are so vibrant and are traditional colors when it comes to doing this type of makeup in real life. The details are amazing. The flowers, the earrings, every detail is so beautiful and thought out. There is not a single thing I don’t like about this piece. In my personal opinion it’s perfect. This art reminded me of Mexico. It reminds me of Dia de los Muertos, the day we celebrate and honor the dead. If you are located in San Jose I would definitely recommend coming to see this wonderful mural.

Source: https://www.mercurynews.com/2015/03/05/milpitas-planners-mull-new-public-art-ordinance/

This artwork sits in my hometown of Milpitas, I would remember passing it at the library, but recently is was moved to the Milpitas City Hall. As a kid, I've always thought the statue was like Paul Revere or someone famous, but it actually has a lot of relevance to Milpitas. The story behind the Milpitas Minute Man was when the imperial city, San Jose, tried to annex Milpitas, but Milpitas fought back. At the time Milpitas was mainly farmland, not imperial. I was attracted to this piece of art because it's always been around me, but I would disregard it's history. Now that I am older, it makes more sense to me as to why the statue has been up for a long time and also what it means to our city. I feel grateful this city's history and what they've always offered. I have nothing against this artwork, in fact I like everything about this statue. It's a 16 foot statue that stands nice and tall. He also carries a long rifle and he is leaning on some type of farm prop. He wears a nice hat that I feel suits what a farmer would wear, everything about the statue's clothing shows history of how things were back then. This artwork will always remind me of the revolt by Milpitas.

This is a beautiful and honoring mural located in Downtown Manteca. I have been drawn to this mural since I moved here from San Jose. I feel that this mural pays and honoring and respectful tribute to soldiers who fought in the Vietnam war.
Seeing this mural gave me an overwhelming sense of pride and appreciation for this country. I cannot say that there is anything I dislike about this art. I do wish that there could be more visible art pieces in town. So far, this is the only one that has caught my attention. There are a few other murals of agriculture, but this piece has always caught my eye. It can be seen driving down Main Street in Manteca and is located on the side of a two story building on the corner of Main St. and Yosemite Ave. When I pulled into parking lot to take a closer look at the art, I sat in my car in awe for a moment, just taking in the detail. After getting a closer look I can tell that this mural was carefully planned out and that the artists put a lot of precise work into it.

Lately, I have been getting into Japanese artwork so I chose this mural that I saw in Japantown this weekend. This artwork honestly means Shabu Shack for me, but I do feel that it is a modern take on an important value in Japan. In Japan, from what I know, samurai’s are a highly respected occupation in Japan. To see a modernized American take on a valued member of Japan, is not only cool but has depth. I feel respect when I see this mural. Personally, when I see people that are doing their best to positively impact the community by using eco-friendly products, I respect them. The solar panels, along with the vertical garden on the side of the samurai cap speaks to the eco-friendly life style that the inhabitant is using. I think the artist is trying to modernize the eco-friendly lifestyle that samurai’s had back in the day, with a 21st century twist on it. I like the room on the top, it looks like a green house but I am not sure. Frankly, I wish I could be there to see what it is really like on the inside. I do not know if I am right about this, but I have been wondering if that is a skateboard rail as the mouth. The staircase at the top, does not sit well, personally I would be too afraid to walk over it. This mural reminds me of a treehouse, I’ve always wanted a treehouse and this is a really cool one.

I think it really captures the sea life of San Francisco, which is really important (San Francisco is surrounded by the ocean). Also, when I go down to the wharf I always see these guys laying around. When I look at this art piece, I think of my family which brings happy thoughts and overall has a positive feel to it. I would always visit San Francisco with my family and I would always pass by this little statue.
Butterflies and Poppies by Van Gogh

I chose this painting of Van Gogh called “Butterflies and Poppies” because it reminds me of how free we are in this life, and I also love and appreciate the butterflies and how I feel when I see them flying around. It is just amazing how a small insect can turn itself to a beautiful butterfly. Once my mother-in-law had milkweed in her yard, and butterflies placed their eggs there, and she brought them inside to hatch in a habitat. After the butterflies were ready to be released, she let my daughter release them. It was a beautiful moment. What attracted me to the painting is the various shades of green and the other colors, and how Van Gogh uses one of my favorite flowers which is the poppy. The emotions this painting brings me is happiness and sadness because at times we don’t appreciate life, and we should learn to let go and be free and enjoy life. I love this painting because I love butterflies and, in this masterpiece, they look so peaceful and beautiful. This art reminds me to be myself and enjoy life.

I got the painting of Van Gogh from this website Vincent van Gogh - Butterflies and Poppies - Van Gogh Museum

When I first visited San Jose state back in 2017 for my SAT, I saw this status. My first opinion was I thought someone famuse won Olympic so they decided to build it at a university. This art working is a memory of a history. It’s a symbol of a history. I got attracted to this art work because when I was walking inside SJSU I saw many different art works yet this one was the biggest and people where stoping by to visit so I did my readers have behind and that’s when I realized it was the black power for the people from our history. This art work has made me feel very cheerful since the African- Americans athletes try to draw a global attention to the plight of color people in the U.S for the injustice and inequality endured by millions of African Americans. I love the fact that two African Americans has won the Olympic one think that makes me feel weird is that they did not put who won the second place, who won the second place is not important but it makes it look like something is missing. This art work is a reminder of how hard everyone fight through for equality so in future everyone can have a equal chance to this society. This art is a history, a reminder more important it’s to show everyone how they won in most challenging times.

While traveling around the Sacramento area visiting some friends and hanging out, we came across real-life mater that was parked on the side of the road in the city of Vacaville. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of one of favorite childhood movies of all time, Cars. I was immediately drawn to the art piece because I had never seen anything like this that was so accurate in real-life before. It made me very nostalgic of my past and childhood, and the little kid in me was very pleased! What I like about the piece is that is feels so realistic and is life sized, I really did feel like I was standing next to mater in the photo. What I did not like was the mouth, even though it was really accurate it would have been more cool if the mouth was incorporated into the front of the piece. This art was significant to me because it reminded me of my inner child, and I wanted to cherish it forever.

I was first attracted to this sculpture when I was in third grade. It is located in Fresno, California. I was born and raised in Fresno. I just moved to San Jose about 4 years ago. I was in Fresno yesterday and drove by this sculpture. It is located in front on the Fresno Art Museum next to a large public park. As a child living in Fresno it was always a sort of right of passage in Elementary school to go to the Fresno Art Museum on a field trip. I must have gone there 4 times in grade school. Reading the title as a child made me think that it was just a sculpture that was balanced and unbalanced at the same time. Now I see it and I see a perfect balance of art that fits perfectly together even though it doesn't go together. I do get emotional when I see this sculpture because it brings me feelings of nostalgia. Everyone wishes to go back and be a kid again or at least I do. The sculpture is a simple steel sculpture of angles, half circles and cylinders. The whole sculpture is one color. I like red but I dislike that it is all one color. I feel like different colors would’ve made it more visually appealing. I like that the artist was a teacher. He definitely gives me hope to accomplish more after becoming a teacher.

I took this picture this morning around 10 am.

This art work is called "Perro Feliz" which means happy dog. The artist of this work is Barbara Abbott. This art work is located at Welsh Park on Kenesta Way San Jose, CA.
As you can see this art work is a happy and playful dog. This to me represents freedom and happiness. Many people gather at parks with family and friends to have a great time. Other just like going to play or walk their pets. This art work reminds me of my childhood because I lived near by and I went to KR Smith (elementary school). I remember my mom would take me and my siblings to that park. We would play on the playground and have a picnic. I remember me and my little brother would get on the dog statue and my mom would take pictures of us. I think the good memories attract me to this art work because whenever I pass by, it brings up fun memories I made there with my family. That art work makes me happy and sentimental. I can't believe that an artwork can make people emotional just by looking at it but now I know why it happens. What I like about this art work is that kids can get on the dog statue and take pictures or they can pose next to it. I also like how it has like pieces of other material like glass in it. I think that makes it unique.

Source: https://www.sanjoseca.gov/Home/Components/FacilityDirectory/FacilityDirectory/2623/1396?npage=3https://www.sanjoseca.gov/Home/Components/FacilityDirectory/FacilityDirectory/2623/1396?npage=3

What attracted me to this art work was the unicorns loving each other because I resemble this love with my partner makes me happy to see this. The emotions it brought to me is hard to explain but its like comfort. Growing up in small closed minded town really suppressed how I am. It took a lot for me to come out and be who I am. walking down streets and seeing murals or art, even people that show equal love makes me so comfortable at feeling safe and homey. What I really like about this is how it makes me feel in a deeper level. I don't dislike anything about this. Yes it reminded me of my community and myself, happy and in love with my hunny.

This public artwork is located at the Plaza de San Jose Shopping Center. It is titled “Coatlique Shopping, Tula Sentries, and Mandalas” by artists, Einar and Jamex de la Torre 2005. The de la Torre brothers made three main pieces inspired by Mexican folk art. These pieces are pointed out each by the title and are spread out among the shopping center. I am specifically focusing on one however, the Tula Sentries.

This artwork reminds me of when I used to go shopping at Target at this center. At first glance it looks like a simple statue. Whenever I would look at it, I never thought much of it. However, now that I am actually paying attention, I notice a lot more then I did before. There are many details in the carvings within the statue. I’m also intrigued by what it could possibly mean. I don’t know much about Mexican folk art so it makes me more curious to learn more.

When I look back on these statues, I get nostalgic. When I was younger I’d get taken to this shopping center all the time. Over the years I started going less and less. The last time I came to this area was probably a couple of years ago especially due to the pandemic.

To be completely honest, when I look at this artwork it does not explicitly stand out to me. I tend to like prefer more modern themed art. However, as I researched more about these pieces I ended up finding it more unique. Since I am Mexican it is cool to see artwork inspired by something originating from my culture. I also like what seems to be the use of stained glass or coloured tiles.

Not only does this artwork remind me of past memories but it also reminds me of traditional Aztec art. Each statue looks like a person with a well defined face, maybe a citizen or a warrior. The legs look almost twisted like a candy cane or bread roll. From afar it seems like the person is standing on top of a cardboard box. Apparently the de la Torre brothers liked to be funny and use more abstract and contemporary themes in their artworks. This makes me more intrigued since I wouldn’t necessarily call their art humorous at first glance. It is possible that maybe the pieces have an inside joke only the brothers know of.

Source:
PUBLIC ART: COATLIQUE SHOPPING, TULA SENTRIES, & MANDALAS (PLAZA DE SAN JOSE SHOPPING CENTER)*.

Before I get started on talking about the art, I would like to mention that, this artwork was done by a Leigh High School student.

This art is located at 172 S Market St San Jose CA 95113. Fun fact, majority of the artwork there were done by High School students around Campbell.

As I walked around Market St, I noticed many structures and painting. But for some reason, this painting seems to have drawn my attention. So I stood there, staring at the painting for almost 7 minutes. Then it hit me, the reason I was so attracted to the painting was because it reminded me of my younger brother Darren. Darren has almost the same outfit. During a normal day, when he gets tired of playing, he would lay on the couch, handcross across his chest while staring at nowhere. It's one of the most purest thing to see. In my opinion, the painting almost represents the innocence of children. The boy in the red shirt, he lays there, peacefully without a care in the world. He doesn't have any bills to pay or worry about going to work. His only job is to be a kid. This painting made me remember my childhood, I had 3 jobs; sleep, eat and school. I had the most purest mind, I could spend an entire day without worrying and thinking about anything. The artwork made me want to spend more time with my brother, it made me want to be a little bit nicer to him, it made me want to almost protect him from the outside world. I did hate one thing about the art though, It made me miss my childhood. Now, I am one of those adults who try to balance social life, work life, school life and family life. It's one of the hardest things ever. They say a people can never have all at once, they have to choose. I had to choose, which was more important, social life or school life.

Life is hard
