The institution of marriage is a concept that continues to change and will continue to do so as we grow as a society. It appears that over generations, society has "let go of the reins" and allowed for certain aspects and ideals of marriage to evolve. David and Jean Fiocchi, a husband and wife from the 1950’s, had been married for more than 60 years. Throughout their years together, the Fiocchi’s dealt with teenage pregnancy, a call to war, raising four children and health challenges, but never once did they consider leaving one another. Until the death of David, early in 2019, they remained committed to one another in-sickness and in-health. They were married in the traditional style, in a church, by a priest and surrounded by their loved ones because that is how marriage was back then. David and Jean’s daughter, Marion, was married in the 1980’s in a similar fashion, except after 23 years and the birth of three children, Marion’s spouse, Peter, decided he wanted a divorce. Marion was raised with the value that marriage meant an everlasting commitment to the other; her example being her married parents. With divorce becoming an acceptable outcome of marriage in the early 90’s and into the 2000’s, they split up in 2015. Peter preceded to get remarried to another woman shortly after. All marriages are founded on the concept of commitment but overtime, as a society, the overall level of commitment has changed. Although many of the ideals and aspects of marriage remain in today's culture as shown when evaluating a family line, the commitment level between two individuals, the physical process of marriage and the allowed partners have all evolved over generations.

A traditional marriage, which society sees very little of today, binds a man and a woman together for life. This ideal of marriage is present in later generations of marriages but has since disappeared in today's marriages. Like David and Jean's marriage, the vow to one another was taken to heart because more than one marriage in a lifetime was considered taboo; however, in today's society, it is becoming more acceptable to get a divorce and to even remarry afterward, like the marriage between Marion and Peter. Although
commitment is still the foundation of a marriage, its importance has diminished because of the growing acceptance of divorce and annulment.

Just like the acceptance of divorce and remarriage, it has become acceptable for a man to marry a man and woman to marry a women. Generations ago, society would've never have allowed for such an action. Same sex marriage is something that continues to be debated today. In the 1960's, 70's, and even 80's, attraction to the same sex was considered wrong and an issue that many parents tried to fix. The treatment of people attracted to the same sex has evolved over time, therefore, allowing for homosexual couples to be wed in all states in the United States. Marion and Peter's have three children. Danielle, one of their daughters, is attracted to women. Neither of her parents was raised with the notion that same sex attraction and marriage was acceptable. Danielle believes she is always going to have to hide that fact about herself from them. Danielle is slowly starting to see the progression of acceptance by both of her parents, and of society as a whole, of her sexuality because of the evolution of marriage.

The Process

The questions commonly asked about a wedding: was it in a church? Was it lead by a ordained minister or priest? Was the couple surrounded by people that hold significance? In society today, a marriage does not have to contain any of the elements above. A traditional marriage would involve all those elements and more. When Peter decided to get remarried to his new wife, Annette, they eloped at a courthouse. They left out family, friends and the idea of being married in God's house. Later on, they had another ceremony in an old style house located in Pentwater, Michigan. Again, this ceremony skipped the traditional idea of being married in a church by a priest or minister.

Through the generations, the institution of marriage has evolved in many ways. Most marriages in the 1960's, 70's and 80's were traditional, meaning that the wedding took place in a church by a priest or minister and bound a man and a women together for life. Over time, the process by which two individuals unite as one through marriage has changed. Into the 1990's and 2000's, divorce and same sex marriage have begun to progress into being considered normal in society. The changing commitment level, the physical process and the allowance of same gendered partners has influenced a positive impact on marriage. Today's society is more progressive than in the past and allows for more people to be themselves and to be happy with one another.
