Presidential and congressional reconstruction compare/contrast

Following Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865, Andrew Johnson became president and inaugurated the period of Presidential Reconstruction (1865–67). Johnson offered a pardon to all Southern whites except Confederate leaders and wealthy planters (although most of these subsequently received individual pardons), restoring their political rights and all property except slaves. He also outlined how new state governments would be created. In early 1866, Congressional Republicans, appalled by mass killing of ex-slaves and adoption of restrictive black codes, seized control of Reconstruction from President Johnson. Congress denied representatives from the former Confederate states their Congressional seats, passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, and wrote the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, extending citizenship rights to African Americans and guaranteeing them equal protection of the laws. The 14th Amendment also reduced representation in Congress of any southern state that deprived African Americans of the vote. In 1870, the country went even further by ratifying the Fifteenth Amendment, which gave voting rights to black men. they both wanted to abolish slavery but congress' punishment against the south was a little more harsh

similarities and differences between the north and south

the north had the higher advantage due to them having communication towers that took only a matter of seconds to transmit messages. They also had a higher production of railroad systems which meant an easier transportation for war supplies. Their only disadvantage is that they had to battle mostly on southern territories. this meant that the south could ambush them at any time. The south had a lot of disadvantages.starting with the north burning most of their railroads. This limited transportation for the south. They had no communication towers, did not have up to date armor, and could not receive supplies on time due to the lack of railroads
