Native Americans living off of what they had. For many years, us as Native Americans were always cropping the same three plants. We didn’t have much to live off of until we came across the “Three sisters.” The three sisters contain corn, beans, and squash. Since we didn’t have much finding the three sisters has truly been great for the Native Americans. The way these three grow is very convenient. We grow the staple foods during spring or summer in north and south america. When planting, they have to be in a specific order of corn, beans, and squash. The pole from the corn provided beans. Squash grew under the leaves and then three grew together. Growing it in the specific order helps the, grow together and mature. Something as a Native American that we make a lot and love is called bean bread. It’s really simple to make and we eat it a lot because it consist of beans, which is one of the three sisters. We either deep fry, bake, or pan fry it. The ingredients we use are : 2 cups flour, ¾ cup powdered milk,1 tablespoon of salt, 1 packet of yeast, and 1 cup of water. You’re going to combined the yeast and warm water to activate, following the instructions add the half activated yeast, then mix. Add small amounts of the yeast until mixture forms dough-like consistency. Form the dough in circular shape. Sprinkle flour on the flat surface and roll out the dough using a rolling pin. From the flattened dough cut small triangles (no longer than 3” to 4”) and fry in oil until golden brown.

Today the game is played with ten players on a lineup and more advanced play style and rules. Some people would compare the Choctaw tribe to the college team known as Maryland. Maryland is very popular due to high winning percentages and games won among the nation. The game of stickball came a long way from Native Americans as entertainment for the villages and tribes to a nation wide popular sport.
Following up on the University of Maryland and how the 2018 season went, Maryland had a record of 14-4. Maryland made it to the playoffs but losing to Duke in the second round 8-13. Even though Maryland didn’t get the championship for the season they still lead in total goals with 210 and an average of 10.44 goals a game. Ending the season with a total of 12 seniors, 4 of those athletes will live on the dream and go play professional lacrosse when the school year is over.

Native Americans enjoyed sports and games just like everyone else. During the time of the 1600’s, they spent a lot of their time growing crops and hunting, but they also enjoyed their freetime. We know, from accounts from the Europeans, that the Natives played a variety of games that looked interesting and fun. They also enjoyed music, and entertained themselves with a number of different instruments.

While hanging out with the tribes, they played a kind of hand game. This involved two players hiding bones or sticks under their hands, shifting them back and forth. The other team has to guess where the bones and sticks are, and the stakes are very high. This game was not only played for fun. Apparently, this was the game used to gain land, horses, and cattle. It may have also been used to get a wife!

Music was also widely played for entertainment, and boy did it sound amazing. From visiting, the Natives often described themselves as enthusiastic music-players. Drums were widely used as were rattles. Rattles were often made of dried gourds, then filled with things like small rocks or seeds to make noise. Other instruments that were influential to the native were wind instruments. These were often made from wood, reeds, or hallowed bones.

Overall, the visit with the Natives showed how they were a group of people who had many different types of entertainment to have some fun and joy in their lives. From handball, stickball, or music, the Natives never got bored since they had many activities to do.
