My first memories of language were positive. I spent much of my youth in a speech therapy class learning how to pronounce "s" and "z" words. Everything else is a blur. I remember my handwriting was atrocious. No one could read my notes. Now that I think about it, I had numerous challenges with language. Yuck!

My second language was an enjoyable experience. I wanted to learn French so I could read original government documents. Also, my grandfather grew up in Canada and spoke Canadian French sometimes. Naturally I gravitated to learning that language in order to strengthen my relationship with my grandfather.

My first memories of language was pretty vague. I distinctly remember being able to understand my parents and my grandma speaking and I was able to understand what they were saying. However, there were times when I had to learn the difference between particles for humans versus particles for animals and my aunt screaming at me as I had used the incorrect one (switching them around).

My second language acquisition was a little more negative. I remember about Kindergarten- second grade, we had to memorize spelling words and the ones that tripped me up the most were 'because' and 'beautiful' I spent long nights attempting to memorize them and even to this day, there are some words that I need to sound out so I could spell them (ie. Gee-or-gee-ah or Be-ay-yoo-ti-full).
I was born and raised in Georgia, however, my first language was Cantonese and my second is English...and yet my English vocabulary far exceeds my Cantonese.

However, I do have fond memories in school of spelling bees, writing competitions and participating in plays throughout early elementary school.

English is my first and only language, so unfortunately my experiences are limited with acquiring a second language. I took Spanish in high school, but I recall very little regarding the language aspect. There was a large emphasis on culture, food and celebrations.

I only speak English and remember learning about letters, spelling. I only have good memories of this. Learning the language came at such a young age. Attempting to learn Spanish for two semesters in high school was difficult and I learned enough to get by, but felt defeated easily. I remember very little from those courses.

My first memories of language acquisition has been for the most part...negative. As child, I was constantly given redirections on how to talk or pronounce my words. As a teen, I went to a Korean school where my brother and I were constantly being reprimanded by the way we would speak the Korean Language.

I did not have much interaction with anyone except adults because of my family dynamics. I developed a skill of inferring and making connections. Despite all of this, I was always an exceptional speller, and I was able to understand unknown words using context clues. To this day, I still have a hard time with auditorily processing things.

I do not know a second language. I always wanted to learn what new words meant and I also was a huge fan of reading and being read to by my teachers and parents. I also enjoyed being corrected when I was speaking incorrectly or misusing a word because I knew that corrections resulted in my improvement with English.

My second language acquisition process has been positive as well. I have progressively learned Spanish at a steady consistent pace and I get a feeling of accomplishment when I'm able to use what I've learned to communicate. I can honestly say that I do not remember learning language or my first memories of using language as a child.

My first memory of language acquisition has been repeated often by my parents. My first language is Hebrew and at 2 years old I was outside playing with the neighborhood kids. I became frustrated with not being able to communicate, so I came in the house and stated "me no speak-a-da Hebrew. Me speak American."

After this my parents couldn't get me to respond in Hebrew to them.

I only re-learned Hebrew as a college freshman when I moved to Israel. I was thrilled to be immersed and had to learn the language to communicate in school and with my Kibbutz Family.

The only thing I do remember is that I used to say birfday instead of birthday.

Second language development was in Spanish and it started EARLY, like 4 years old/Kindergarten. I got instruction at my school and at home (my dad knew a little for work). It came very easily to me and I practiced whenever I could. My instruction continued through first year of college. Since then I've not had consistent practice with speaking Spanish. My strength is with understanding reading and listening in Spanish. If I'm forced to use it, it does click and come back to me though.

It is a complex and dynamic system that allows humans to express thoughts, ideas, emotions, and information.

Language is the collections of words/sounds that a group of people uses to communicate. It's generally passed down through generations as my learning of English was, so I don't have concrete memories. I do remember spending a lot of time learning phonics as a preschooler. Morphology was also taught somewhere along the line. It made Spanish and French classes in high school accessible. It's always been intriguing to hear different dialects of English and learn how they've evolved.

My first memories of language are positive. I am from the South, so I grew up sounding “country”. I have a very soft speaking voice so that mixed with the country way that I pronounce words always made me stand out from the crowd of voices in the room. Most people I know don’t need to see me for them to be able to tell that I am the one talking.

I do not have a second language. I took Spanish 1-3 in high school and was fluent. (I could hold a conversation) I didn’t use it in college and my first years teaching so I sadly lost everything that I had learned about the language. “If you don’t use it, you will lose it” Maybe one day, I’ll have the time and energy to learn it again.

Language is a shared way of communication. The memories I have of learning English mostly surround spelling and the rules (ex. I before E, etc.) for it. I always felt it was really important to learn to spell words correctly, so I typically did really well at spelling on assignments, weekly spelling tests, and spelling bees. I took 6 years of French spanning from middle school into college and I remember how much harder it was to learn a new language. Spelling was not my main concern at that point, it was conjugating verbs and getting the subject and verb order correct in a sentence.

It's a complex and dynamic tool that enables us to express thoughts, emotions, ideas, and information.

I grew up in Jamaica; our official language is English; however, we use our dialect – patois to communicate in informal settings. Learning our dialect was enjoyable, but when it was time to use English, I struggled with words that started with ‘h’ and ‘th' because we do not pronounce them in patois. To date, I still struggle with this and thus have to consciously pronounce them.

Tiffany

I think of language as a system of communication made up of symbols that allow people to share meaning. It’s how we connect, express emotions, and share our stories.

I do not speak another language. From an early age, I learned that there are different ways to speak depending on the audience and situation. At home and in the community, African American Vernacular English was a natural and comfortable way of communicating. It wasn’t something explicitly taught, but rather something you absorbed from listening to family, neighbors, and peers. It wasn’t just about words or grammar, it carried humor, emotion, and shared experiences that connected us as a community.

At the same time, I learned that there was a "proper" way to speak, especially in school or in formal settings.

Language is used to communicate with one another and convey meaning to support conversation among others.

I am only fluent in one language, however, I can be conversational in ASL and am refreshing my memory and language skills in Spanish. Regarding my memories of learning English, they are vague. However, I have always loved reading which I believe helped me learn English as a child. My family always read to me each night which cultivated a love for reading. I do remember having difficulty with auditory comprehension of language when someone was speaking to me. I always benefited from having visuals.

My idea of language is the sounds, syllables and words that help us describe things to one another or give directions to one another along with the body language that helps to express what we want when we don't use words. My earliest memory about learning a language was when I was in pre-k. I had a southern dialect from my grandmother that raised me although I was being raised in New Jersey I was not around a lot of other people so the only voices I heard were those of my grandparents so my words sounded like theirs and I know a lot of children made fun of me so I made it a point not to sound like my grandparents into sound more like in northerner but I could speak it I remember speaking but I remember feeling picked at because of the way my sounds and words came out and that made me self-conscious about speaking for a while. I also remember being told not to use certain phrases that we used because they were not appropriate for school even though they were not bad.
