After Hitler was able to come to power and control most German Laws, not many people cared. Most knew that Jews and other groups were being treated unfairly and that German people as a whole didn’t have the same rights or freedoms anymore. People didn’t mind this because people who weren’t being prosecuted were able to live their old lives. They were making money again. This quote shows one of the main reasons Hitler was able to come to power and why people were okay with it. These reasons are that the economy was poor and so were most people and the idea of the aryan race Germans being able to enjoy life with a stable economy seemed more attractive than trying to put effort into throwing Hitler out of power. Those who didn’t agree with Hitler were either to scared to speak or didn’t want to put the economy back to how it was before. This shows how the German citizens let the holocaust happen because they weren’t to heavily negatively affected. Not just the Nazi party was to blame, but also those who didn’t try and help the Jews or stop unfair laws from being made. From this, there are still some questions. How could people fight back or help and who helped people being targeted by the Nazis?

Children and teens that were part of the Hitler Youth group became extremely attached to the Nazi party. They thought there was promise for success and opportunities because of what Hitler was doing. Many people believed what he said without questioning it and would do anything for him. This got to an extreme point of death. They didn’t realize they could put their own lives at risk and they didn’t care. Even if Hitler died, his life would have been celebrated by supporters of Nazis. This was especially worrying because it was difficult to change the minds of Nazis/supporters. Children in Hitler youth were so invested in it that they would do almost anything for it. This is part of the reason he came to power. He made children believe they had a voice and would give them attention and make them feel powerful. Giving teens and kids that kind of authority made a large generation of people who would carry on the Nazi ideology. Even with the amount of people who agreed with him, how did so many people continue to like him after they saw the brutality against Jews? This could have been because the didn’t care that he was a cruel racist leader, they wanted to over look his flaws. They also could have been scared or happy that it just wasn’t them being harmed so they didn’t bother to do anything.

Hitler announced plans to invade Russia. However, a year earlier he signed a nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union. This was just one example of how Hitler manipulated people. He told people that the Germans have done nothing wrong. When a country fought back after they were invaded, he managed to convince a disturbing amount of people that Germany was defending themselves. He also told the German people lies about groups that he targeted for the final solution, this was to prevent Germans from helping those groups or be to make them too afraid to help. Even within Jewish communities, he gave some of them power to keep the Jews from trusting each other. This was likely one of the reasons the Nazi party was able to come to power. They had such extreme supports that would listen to everything that Hitler said without question. Even with other countries, he would do things like sign agreements so that they wouldn’t fight so other counties wouldn’t intervene until Hitler got to decide who was involved by invading their country. Many people like to think that they wouldn’t be so easily convinced by someone so racist and horrible. Unfortunately it is likely if many people didn’t have the knowledge we have today and were told of these things, they would support it or do little to stop it.

Not just the Jews in Germany were suffering. Jewish or “undesirable” people were being eradicated all over Europe, especially in counties nearby Germany. Huge groups of Jews would be sent to concentration camps to work until they died, or just to be sent to die. Some countries couldn’t prevent this by themselves because they didn’t have a strong enough military to fight back. As a result, the lives of many people relied on the support of other counties. Some countries did their best to send what they could to help those being sent to camps or targeted. This could be done by allowing Jews to be placed in their country or suppling resources. Many acts like these weren’t done until things like the final solution were far underway. Many Jews had already been killed and people still failed to see that there was an issue.

Alfons cared more for his animals than he did for human life. His animals death bothering him far more than the unjust treatment and murder of the jewish population is concerning. He doesn’t even see Jews as worthy as an animal. He has been so conditioned into believing that he is doing the right thing and everyone else is wrong that even the death of his animals is more important than the mass murder of Jews. Even if Alfons didn’t know Jews were being murdered, he fully aware that they were being taken from their homes and terrorized by people like him. This part is also a turning point for Alfons. This is when, even though there are not many people left, he works harder and crueler.

The workers at the concentration camp prepared a story for the Red Cross when they came in to inspect. They knew their plan would work because the Red Cross didn’t actually care. Guards at the camp convinced them that the prisoners were disgusting and didn’t even bother to use the nice showers the facility had. The Red Cross didn’t ask the prisoners any questions or do much of any inspecting. The guards at the camp were even able to force more anti-Semitic ideas on them. I chose this passage because it shows how close the prisoners were to escape. It also shows the failings of other organizations and countries. There have been many situations where if someone actually looked into the situation, they might have greatly improved or saved the lives of many. Most people didn’t bother or were unaware of how harsh the situations were, but did know that the Jews were being sent to work camps and still didn’t care. The failings of others that were relied on life or death situations lead to a high death count.

Helen has finally been liberated from the concentration camp she was at. Like many other survivors she was extremely ill and close to death. After this she made it to Holland the girl she was traveling with, Becky, turned on her. Becky told officials at a displaced persons registration center that Helen was a Moff and is an enemy. As a result, Helen was sent to a cell. This was probably heartbreaking to Helen. Becky has been traveling with Helen the entire time. Throughout the whole trip she seemed friendly. When Becky lied to official I was unprovoked as well. Fortunately Helen was freed. However, if she hadn’t been so lucky, she may not have been freed. Helen still has no idea why Becky would do that to her. Even though Helen was extremely close to failure when trying to get home many times, this incident could have horribly impacted her.

The French captured anybody heavily affiliated with the Nazi party. Hitler youth leaders were also included. The French military took them to sentence them. Alfons and some other boys all had the same sentence of execution. After conversing with one father nicer French officers, Alfons found out they likely would not actually die. Before talking to the officer, Alfons genuinely thought he would die. For readers, this seemed like the last of Alfons as well. Alfons surviving was a major twist in events. Many readers may have thought that Alfons deserved his sentence and was disappointed to hear that he would be okay, others may have been relived that Alfons would be able to survive. Other may have wanted Alfons to survive so he can see what was actually happening to Jews. He does eventually believe what really happened. He did not believe that Nazis were killing people at first even with pictures and it took Alfons a while to realize that what he saw was true.

Alfons went to view the trial of some of the most notorious Nazi leaders. He noticed that some people he respected were were twisting their story to make it seem as if they were innocent or they were trying the help the Jews. All respect was lost for these people in Alfons’ mind. This is some of the first signs of growth for Alfons. He was originally convinced that genocide didn’t occur during the Holocaust. He slowly began to realize more and more what really happened and what some of the people he looked up to were really doing. Even though Alfons did follow the Nazi ideology and act on those beliefs, he was able to genuinely self reflect recognize what he did was wrong. Alfons then went on to dedicate his life to helping people remember the Holocaust and help people understand what Jews went through. This is also evidence that Alfons was able to become a better person after the Holocaust and understand what he did wrong. Some may argue that he is completely innocent of his actions because he was so young when he was fed Nazi propaganda, he might not be excused of every action but his behavior after the Holocaust seemed to greatly improve Alfons life and situation as a whole.

Helen was able to get to America with her daughter, Dorice. This was likely because she already had family in America. Since work was scarce and had low pay at the time she need to find a job. Once she did she was fired without being given a reason. She later found out that it was because she was Jewish. The company she worked for never hired any Jews. Helen was suprised to see a country that so prominently expresses their freedom would have people like that. Some may see this as a minor offense. However, this was a main reason the holocaust started. People would display small anti-semitist acts and people slowly began to associate Jews with negative things and viewed them so. Germany was just unlucky to end up like that. People who believed these things weren’t innocent from the Holocaust but the Holocaust didn’t happen because all of Germany wanted to kill Jews, it happen because one person was able to expand on pre-existing racism and was convincing. This could have happened to many countries, including America if a person like Hitler came to power. Even after the events of the Holocaust, people still had prejudice against Jews.
