The Iconography in Little Miss Sunshine can't get any more true to the road trip genre. There were highway signs, a diner, a gas station, highways and open roads, and a motel. The film really felt like a road trip film and it is because of the iconography.

I believe that the plot of Little Miss Sunshine is consistent with the road trip genre. The family had an internal realization by the end of the film. For example, Dwayne did not talk for the entire film. When he realized that he was color blind he started talking to his family and even apologized for disrespecting them.

The little things like the vans bad transmission, the grandpa dying, and Steve carrel's phenomenal acting as Frank, make this movie into the perfect goofy road trip film.

Most tragic comedies are set in urban/suburban areas to make them feel more real. There was an aspect to the film that is unrealistic, like when they stole the grandpa's dead body from the hospital, But the urban setting did actually help the film feel realistic.

The film Little Miss Sunshine can be classified as a mix of tragicomedy and the road trip genre. However There is a larger purpose behind the film and the director used these two genres to highlight it. At the end of the film i realized that every single person in the family had a realization/growth by the end of the film. The biggest being Richard. Richard in the beginning of the film was all about his 9 steps to success and was set on his daughter winning the contest. And in the end he was dancing on the stage to inappropriate songs with Olive Just to make her not feel bad for losing.
