From her own experience she didn't want to stay in the shadows forever but instead work with other women and help them recover. After years of practice and research she became a clinical social worker and made it her goal to help with sex trade problems. In San Diego which is in the top 13 for sex trafficking. Gernerthope's safe house  and has helped over 100 victims and some even young as 18.
