California Wildfires: November 2018 by Ciara Brannan

This wall consists of a series of posts conspiring about the current devastating wildfires in California. This catastrophic blaze began suddenly on a Thursday morning on November 8th, 2018, and has scorched huge amounts of land across California. The fire is said to have started in northern California and adopted the name "Camp Fire" after Camp Creek Road in Butte County, which was a quiet, rural area. This portion of the fire has burned approximately 148,000 acres along with 12,263 structures (including family homes) and 118 apartment buildings. The Camp Fire has lead to the deaths of 71 civilians and injuries to 5 firemen, while authorities try to locate 1,011 missing people. With flames spreading rapidly due to 50-60mph Santa Ana winds, another section of California has been affected as well. This portion of the fire has been named the "Woolsey Fire" and "Hill Fire" and is burning around Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. This section of flames has burned approximately 98,362 acres in addition to 836 buildings, and caused the deaths of 3 civilians, and 3 injured firemen. As of November 17th 2018, the wildfires are only 55% contained. This disastrous event has been recorded as the deadliest, and most destructive wildfire in history.

Burning Its Way into History

This is one of the first updates CNN's social network site had released on November 10th, 2018. In this shocking update, the headline announces the death count raises to 9 due to the flames. CNN states that the town of Paradise of 26,000 people located in Butte County, California, has been burned to the ground by Camp Fire, avoiding most of the town's trees which the Mayor states is a good thing. Also in Malibu, a city with a population of 12,000, filled with luxurious beach houses with celebrities and millionaires residing-- had been threatened by the Woosley fire, and were issued a mandatory evacuation. Santa Ana winds are said to a main cause to the rapid spread of the fire. Santa Ana winds are strong, extremely dry downslope winds affecting the valleys of California. Low humidities, combined with the heated compressed air, plus high wind speeds, result in critical fire weather conditions that are nearly impossible to contain. CNN's TV broadcasting and social network site provides frequent updates for this ongoing tragic event, and remains straight to the point in their posts, with multiple statements and videos from those affected. This event is saddening and is not treated with any insensitivity from CNN.

This article is posted by abc News on their social network site. This is another update on the wildfires and how fast the flames are spreading. The article states "The fire grew over 10 times in size from Friday morning -- when it was just 8,000 acres -- to Saturday evening. It grew 2.5 times larger in just 24 hours Saturday." (Osborne, abc News, 2018). These are terrifying numbers. The article also states that predictions are the fire is only going to get worse into the following week. The fire was only 15% contained on Sunday evening with over 800 firefighting personnel working around the clock to try and calm the flames. This quick progression of the wildfire is hard to watch, but hopefully with the exposure from news social media sites encourage the public to donate to the people in need.

Trump blames the wildfires on the fact that California's forest management is "poor". He also claims he will cut federal payments to the town's for forestry management if changes aren't made. My initial reaction to this tweet was I thought it was incentive and poorly timed for him to release this statement to the public. Many firefighters have been risking their lives trying to save people and prevent the fire from spreading and Trump does not acknowledge that in this tweet. This leaves a handful of people feeling insulted by his words. However, many people came to Trump's defense saying that the town of Paradise was warned about their dry vegetation and is responsible for the fire starting, and spreading so quickly.

This is a post that proves that not even the upper class can be so lucky to avoid natural disasters. This is an Instagram post made from Liam Hemsworth who lived in Malibu, California, was a victim of the Woosley wildfire and unfortunately had his house and belongings engulfed in flames. His condolences go out to all the victims and sends his thanks to the firefighters for their efforts. Miley Cyrus, a well known actress and singer who is also married to Hemsworth posted a photo of her burned home and encourages donations to the "Malibu Foundation" to go towards the city and it's victims. This post really grounded the famous actors and showed the city that even the rich and famous are suffering.

This is a really unfortunate article released by the social network site People.com about a woman named Deseriee Edman. Edman survived the shooting attack in Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California where 12 people were shot and killed just a day before the wildfires started. Less than 24 hours later, her neighborhood in Malibu was ordered to emergency evacuate the area due to the fire spreading. Unfortunately, her house and belongings had been burned by the Woolsey fire. Edman is thankful that her and her family have made it out of the fires safely and alive. This is really bad luck if I've ever seen it, and I wish her and the victims faith and strength.

This a Youtube video created by a channel named Bloomberg Technology. The video talks about the smoke produced by the fire, and how it is spreading over the San Fransisco Bay Area, polluting the breathing air. It is said that winds aren't that strong over the Bay Area and that once the smoke is blown away, the air is congested again by the resilient Camp Fire's smoke that is still continually clouding up the sky. It is mentioned that everyone in the area needs to wear a mask over their mouths to avoid breathing in the smoke. Schools and work places and (including Google headquarters) are closed and people are encouraged to stay home as much as possible to avoid breathing excess smoke. These types of broadcasts bring awareness to the locals and remind residents to be cautious of air exposure.

Trump puts his initial thoughts aside when he visits the town of Paradise, California which was almost entirely burned to the ground. Trump quotes "Right now, we want to take care of the people who have been so badly hurt" and expresses his sympathy to the Mayor and government officials in Paradise. However, when questioned by the media his opinion on the state of the forests, Trump stands true to his beliefs being that California became too overgrown with dangerous fuels is was poorly managed, and that simply raking the ground could prevent such tragedies. Too soon if you ask me.

Many have donated money to the American Red Cross, to the firefighters and families in need, humane societies, and the community neighborhoods to help rebuild their communities. It's important people come together during these ruinous weeks the state is going through. It's encouraging to see so many wealthy people/companies such as Facebook and Disney offering to help the victims affected.

It's a new opportunity for inmates. Inmates without history of sexual harassment, kidnapping, gang affiliation, or life sentences that also pass a physical examination are able to train and join the firefighting personnel and help save lives for just $2 a day, and an additional $1 for every hour spent against an active fire. The article also states "An inmate also earns extra time off of their sentence for good behavior, typically two days off for each day served." (Goodkind, newsweek, 2018) This is a rare opportunity for the inmates that involves working outdoors away from their facility, and access to better quality food while working. However, inmates are not entitled to the same safety rights as someone not in prison, and their wages are very low. I think this is brave of the inmates and shows that some criminals do have sympathy, and are willing to help vulnerable people.

The site has 3 catagories to donate too: emergency relief and assistance to people who require financial need in areas impacted by the Woolsey Fire, Community Rebuilding, and Wildfire Prevention and Climate Change Resilience. This organization is thoughtful and is going to help a lot of people in need and hopefully prevent a tragedy like this from happening again. The people who launched this website set up a platform for donations for the people and I think it's really important and necessary.
