My character is Cory Maxson from the movie Fences. He is the son of Rose and Troy Maxson. He is respectful to all of his peers and has a passion for football. His father, Troy does not support his football career but Cory does not let that stop him from doing what he loves.

This quote represents how courageous Troy is because he finally decides to stand up to his father after he has been shadowing him for so long. He says "I ain't scared of you" to his father and that shows how much he has matured throughout the novel to no longer be afraid to stand up to his father.

I sympathize with Cory because of how Troy has treated him. Troy did not want Cory to pursue his dreams of playing football professionally because of his own past experiences with sports. As a person, Cory is good at football, academically smart and brave. He is confident and hopeful for the future. However, some weaknesses he has is that he tried too much to be like his father, waited on his father for approval and stood up to father a little too late.

This poem called "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou relates to Cory because it shows how someone has gone through tough times but above it all, they persevered. For example, "You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise." This quote relates to Cory because it talks about how you can tell people what you want about them or tread them in the dirt and that's basically what Cory's father was doing. Then it says how like dust I'll rise and that represents Cory standing up to his father about not being afraid of him.
https://familyfriendpoems.com/poem/57752

The lyrics in this song relate to how Cory found himself. For instance "You know I decided. That I'm gonna pull myself together I finally decided and I found the way to fight it." Cory decided that he was going to stand up for himself and do what he wanted to do without the influence of his father. Cory is "fighting" the disagreements he has about football with his father and his father passes and Cory decided to join the Marines instead.

- Fighting Against Racial Discrimination

-"Son—I come from five generations of people who
was slaves and sharecroppers—but ain’t nobody in my
family never let nobody pay ’em no money that was a way
of telling us we wasn’t fit to walk the earth. We ain’t never
been that poor. (Raising her eyes and looking at him)
We ain’t never been that—dead inside."

-This novel takes place in the 1950's so racism is a relevant topic. The quote I chose is how Mama takes pride in her ethnicity and holds herself too high to accept money from a man to not live in a white neighborhood. With her pride, she stands up and explains how she wouldn't accept money to not live in a white neighborhood just because they are black. Mama fought to break the segregation standards and sticks with moving into the house. This act shows how she fought against racial discrimination from Mr. Lindner and is the first step to integration.

- Betrayal

-"Troy: I’m talking, woman, let me talk. I’m trying to
find a way to tell you . . . I’m gonna be a daddy.
I’m gonna be somebody’s daddy."

-I chose this quote to portray the theme of betrayal because Troy had betrayed his family. He got with another woman and had a baby and that's when he decided to tell Rose. As a result, Cory no longer respected his father and Rose no longer wanted to stay with him. Rose felt that he cheated on her because she didn't fulfill her duty as a wife. Troy just made a big mistake and talked about how the woman gave him happiness as if Rose couldn't provide the same thing.

-A theme that is seen throughout "A Raisin in the Sun" and "Fences" is race. Both of these stories take place in the 1950's where tensions are high between races. In Fences, Troy requested to drive the garbage truck like the white men do. He was granted that opportunity. In Fences, a neighborhood of white people didn't want the Youngers to move in to the house in their neighborhood because they were a different race. Both of them fought for racial equality in some way.

-Some differences that are seen throughout the novel and play is death. Death was not a theme that occured in "A Raisin in the Sun" but it occured in Fences. Cory's father talked about wrestling with the "Devil" in a story and was referring to death. Death had always been an issue that Troy deals with. In the end, death won over Troy but the interesting part is that Cory feels relief after Troy passes. He feels relieved because he no longer has to feel the need to live up to his expectations.
