Scenario:

Clara is an 8-year-old girl with a slight hearing loss in both ears. The third-grader enjoys working in pairs and small groups with peers but doesn't always stay focused on the teacher during whole-group instruction.

Although she sits up front and doesn't need any assistive technology to participate, Clara sometimes looks away from the teacher when he is teaching and neglects to pay attention to his directions for assignments. She is often more interested in what her peers are doing around her than listening to instruction.

The team discusses Clara's present levels of academic achievement and functional performance, including her need to become more engaged in learning. Noting this and other data, the team focuses on improving Clara's on-task behavior in the upcoming school year.

The team writes this goal regarding Clara's engagement:

“By the end of the school year, during whole-group instruction, Clara will demonstrate on-task behavior 85 percent of the time.”
