Six Sigma - A Process for Reducing Production Defects

As co-founder of TAL Management Services, Todd Lovejoy leverages over 30 years of experience in the technology and manufacturing industries to provide startups and mid-cap companies with dedicated consulting services. Additionally, Todd Lovejoy is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt through the International Association for Six Sigma Certification, a professional association that delivers testing and accreditations for Lean Six Sigma Certification and training programs.

At its core, Six Sigma is about improving operations, in ways that are defined by no more than 3.4 defects for each million opportunities. Defects are further defined as anything that fails to meet customer specifications, whether in a manufactured product or a service provided. The measurement-based strategy employs a well-defined process of “define, measure, analyze, improve, control” (DMAIC).

In addition, there is a DMADV (define, measure, analyze, design, verify) protocol in place for achieving incremental improvement in existing processes that do not meet specifications. In certain cases, Six Sigma DMADV strategies may be utilized when a major systemic overhaul is in order. These are managed by highly trained, results-focused Six Sigma Master Black Belts.

Here are a few traits that effective business leaders share:

- Persistence. Not every business endeavor will play out as imagined, but effective leaders don’t give up when they fail. Good leaders pick themselves up and try again.

- Fearlessness. Accomplishing something great requires great risk. Good leaders are not afraid of risk. They are willing to make decisions that scare others, but they are not reckless and carefully analyze the risks and rewards of their choices.

- Employee-focus. When employees feel valued, they experience higher levels of motivation and satisfaction. Business leaders play a big role in this by focusing on their employees’ happiness. Leaders recognize their teams' contributions and successes and are fast to congratulation them on a job well done.
