2)     On the above screen recording I have presented my first steps in OmegaT. I chose individual options with a mouse to show you what I exactly did to create a project.

 

First, you need to open OmegaT, subsequently you right-click on the Project in the top left corner. Then you need to click New to create a New Project. As you can see on the recording, there appears a pane. You need to name a folder and save it on the desktop. Now you can see another pane. Make sure the languages are correct. In the Source Files Language choose EN-GB, which means British English, and in the Target Files Language choose PL and click OK. Now, you can see another pane. There is zero (0) next to individual number of segments since you have not uploaded any source text yet. Click on Copy Files to Source Folder and choose a source text (double click on the Microsoft Word file – docx extention). Now, you can see that number of segments has changed. Close the pane and minimise OmegaT. Subsequently, find the Project you have created on the desktop and open it. It is necessary to upload Translation memory. To do so, you need to open the tm folder and copy there your translation memory (tmx extention) under folder called audio. Afterwards, you can close the panes and come back to OmegaT. Click on the Project in the top left corner, then click reload. Next, you can translate fast individual segments by shortcuts CTRL + R (click the cursor at the beginning of the segment and translate it by the shortcut). If you want to translate another segment, you do not need to click at the beginning of another segment, you can only use next shortcut CTRL + N. Translate as many segments as you want this way, e.g. 10. To save the Target text, you need to use shortcut CTRL + D. Next click CTRL ­+ L to see the pane, it shows how many segments have been translated. Right-click on blue highlighted bar and choose Open Target File. You can see the Target text, which is not fully translated because you have translated only few segments. Close the pane and open your Project again. Click on the target. The file is called like the Source text (with the “ST” ending), you need to rename it into TT instead of ST.

 

Additionally, you can also create your glossary based on the text. To do so, mark a selected word, right-click Add Glossary Entry. Then, the pane appears. Translate a word in the Target term. If you want, you can also add some comment about this word. When you click OK, glossary is created.

First, you need to unzip a file of a sample dictionary. Subsequently, you need to copy it to the dictionary file (in your created project). If you are back in OmegaT, you will see that dictionary is already uploaded. 

If you want to check an exact information about any modification in the segments, you can do it by following:

1)     Click on View, at the top of OmegaT

2)     Find Modification info (you do not need to click it)

3)     Next you will see three options to choose:

-        Display for current segment 

-        Display for all segments

-        Display none

If you choose the first option, you will see a specific information about a marked segment (you will see who modified it and when exactly – date and time down to the second), if you click display for all segments, you will a modification info for each modified segment. If you want these information to disappear, choose display none.

OmegaT has many useful functions that can make your process of translating much easier. For example, in View you can see a range of options to choose to mark the particular segments of the text. In 4.3.2 version of OmegaT these options are:

-        Mark Translated Segments (If checked, the translated segments will be marked in yellow)

-        Mark Untranslated Segments (If checked, the untranslated segments will be marked in violet)

-        Mark Paragraph Delimitations (If checked, separations between paragraphs in the source document will be marked)

-        Display Source Segments (If checked, source segments will be shown and marked in green)

-        Mark Non-Unique Segments (If checked, non-unique segments will be marked in pale grey)

-        Mark Segments with Notes (If checked, segments with notes will be marked in cyan)

-        Mark Non-breakable Spaces (If checked, non-breakable spaces will be displayed with a grey background)

-        Mark Whitespace (If checked, white spaces will be displayed with a small dot)

-        Mark Bidirectional Algorithm Control Characters (This option displays bidirectional control characters)

-        Mark Auto-Populated Segments (This option displays bidirectional control characters)

-        Mark Glossary-Matches (To underline matching terms in the source part of the segment)

-        Language Checker

-        Aggressive Font Fallback (Check this option in case OmegaT does not display some glyphs properly)

You can select each of these functions separately, as well as many or all of them at the same time. You can also easily turn them off by clicking again on the function/s you previously selected.

2)     Afterwards, you need to check language settings. Click CTRL+E. There should be only one PL in Translated Files Language (no PL–PL)

3)     Next do the following: Options, Access Configuration Folder, Spelling. Then you need to change the names of the files, all should be the same (pl)

4)     Then click Options, Preferences, and find Spellchecker. In the table you should see: pl–Polish. If you do not see that you need to mark Automatically check the spelling of the text (if it is not active, spelling dictionary will not work)

5)     It is done. You can go to your text, right click on the word that is written incorrectly and then you will see suggestions to choose.

Another thing I have learnt in OmegaT was to change a language of the program. It is quite a useful skill when you prefer to work in OmegaT in another language or if you just want to check an equivalence of a given expression. In the video I showed how to do that. You can change a language within a minute. First, you need to access Local Disc, then find Program Files, next OmegaT, and finally  OmegaT file with .ini extension (OmegaT.14J.ini). Afterwards, you need to right click on that file and choose: edit with Notepad, edit as Administrator. Finally, you can change a language – you just need to change the language (Duser language and Duser country) as I showed on the video and save it.

OmegaT has many functions which can improve your work. I have learnt many of them and I found them very useful. On the screen recording I showed some of them.

 

1)     Checking issues: If you want to check if there are any types of issues in your text, you can easily do it by clicking Tools, Check issues. Then you will see a table with possible issues that appeared in your text. There are different types of issues, you can select these types in the table (Tag issues, Spelling issues, Terminology issues, LanguageTool issues). If you click OK, you will see if there are any issues. It is really helpful.

2)     Changing translator’s ID: If you want to change a translator’s ID, you can go to Options, Preferences, Team, and then tape the ID you want and click OK. 

3)     Changing colours: If you want to change the colours of a given segments in OmegaT, you can choose Options, Preferences, Colours. Then you will see a list of items. If you want to change a colour of a given segment, just mark it on a table first, then choose a given colour and confirm with OK.

4)     Checking which formats are compatible with OmegaT: this is necessary to know which formats of the documents are compatible with the program in which you are translating. If you want to check that choose Options, Preferences, File filters, and you will see a list of formats that are compatible with OmegaT. 

 

 

One of the things I have learnt is how to translate plugins. To do this, it is necessary to install Poedit, which is a computer-aided translation programme for documentation and user interfaces.

When you already have the programme installed, you can search for a plugin to translate. You can find it on the WordPress website in the tab Plugins. When you choose one of them and click Help to translate it! You can see which plugins are translated (and at which level) or non-translated. There is a list of languages and the percentages in which a particular plugin has been translated. You can also check who translated the individual plugins and when.
If you want to translate a particular plugin, you need to select it and click Export. It is important to select what you want to translate. If you select all current, you will download the particular page that is enabled. However, if you select only matching the filter, you will download the whole text to be translated. Interestingly, there are glossaries available on the WordPress website that can be helpful.

In the screen recording, I showed how to translate in Poedit. All you have to do is to select a string and start translating. If you are not sure if the translation of the string is correct, you can click Needs work, then the string is highlighted in orange. You can also add comments to strings. What is more, on the right side of the screen, there are suggestions that you can use while translating. It is enough to click on a preferred suggestion and it will be automatically pasted into the string.

In the screen recording I showed my first steps in memoQ. I have learnt how to:

1)     Create a new project in memoQ

2)     Set up the project languages

3)     Create and add Translation Memory (TM) and Term Base (TB)

4)     Enable TM and TB plugins

5)     Add the source text and add new files to an existing project

6)     Translate the text using the Editor pane

7)     Add terms to TB

8)     Edit terms in TB

9)     Copy tags

10) Insert selected prompts from TM

11) Insert terms from TB prompts

The most important thing I have learnt is to find the main settings of the program, which are extremely important for the program to work properly. They are located in the top left corner (cogwheel). In these settings, we can set up the languages, enable TM and TB plugins, and many other functions. However, there are also other settings, which concern a given project. They are in the Project home.

I have also learnt how to add new files to an existing project. It can be made in two ways: to click Import in the Documents tab or to right-click and import.

Otherwise, I have learnt how to translate a text in the Editor pane, copy tags and insert selected prompts from TM/TB. If you want to copy tags, it is necessary to mark Tag Insertion in the Quick Access tab and just paste tags with a cursor. You can also paste them by clicking Copy Next Tag Sequence. If you want to insert selected prompts, you should click CTRL + number of a given prompt, for example, CTRL+1.

It is also crucial to know how to add and edit terms in TB. You should mark a given word, right-click and choose Add term, or click CTRL + E. If you want to edit a term: add details to this word or paste an image, you should click on the pencil and make changes, as I showed in the video.

In the above screen recording, I presented how to make an alignment in memoQ.

The first thing to do is to create an empty project. We also create Translation Memory which has to be marked, as you can see in the video.

Afterward, we should go to LiveDocs where we create an empty corpus. We click create new and we name the corpus. It also should be marked and highlighted.
In the table below, we right-click to Add Alignment Pairs. Then, we add source and target texts, as it is shown in the video. Both texts have to be linked with a blue line, but if they are not, we should click the below option Link documents.

In the further step, we double-click on the texts and click Remove All Auto Links. Then, we can align segments. If the segment of source text does not match its target segment we should click on the segment on the left side and the one on the right side, then Create Cross Link.

When we mark everything that is needed we click Run Aligner and Confirm All Auto Links again. 

The last step is to find the crossed segments, Create Synchro Links and Confirm the last time. When we do it, we can Export to TM.

Another translation programme I have managed to learn is Wordfast Anywhere. 

In the following screenshots, I have presented the main actions in that programme.

First, I showed how to create a new project: It is necessary to set up a project in the Project tab. The further step is to create TM and TB.

To upload a file, it is necessary to click on the green plus next to a created project. However, it is crucial to know that the programme does not translate PDF files, so when I tried to upload the PDF file, the table appeared with that information. Then I had to download a file in a .doc

To translate a text: go to the Translation tab and click Start/Next or use a shortcut ALT+DOWN. If we click Previous or ALT+UP we are back to the previous segment. If we click Copy source then the source segment is copied to the target segment. If we click Delete Target then translation from the target segment is deleted.

In the TM&Glossaries tab, we can do different actions, for example, add new terms and find our dictionary (click on Glossary Search).

In the Review tab, we can preview our translation.

In the File tab, we can see Statistics and Analyse reports.

In the Wordfast Anywhere settings, we have access to different useful functions of the program, for example, we can set a threshold or see a table of shortcuts, which can be modified by us.
