I didn’t know districts were using just caukins to teach literacy. I always thought it was just a piece of instruction. I learned as a child through open court, and of course sesame street. Now seasame street is not on public tv but through hbo! I have seen and experienced this with lower level ESL and adult learners. I also see similarities with the curriculum this film recommended and parts of the Barton Dyslexia System. I very strongly recommend the use of this system one-on-one with child and adult students who have or are likely to have dyslexia.

We are trying to work with our local university. In our school district we are also training our teachers and coaches in LETRS. This training has impacted best practices in our classrooms. Literacy coaches also work with teachers on implementing the Science of Reading. We are doing our best using our current core curriculum (Wonders).

I had been a social studies teacher previously (in high school). I didn't know anything about the "reading wars" until I was neck-deep in my research. I was--and am still--shocked by all of this. Within scientific circles--psychology, cognitive science, etc.--this is settled science. Early readers have to be taught how to map sound information onto letters. This isn't a "debate" in the scientific community...
