There were parents who lived with their two sons. the older brother had the responsibility of moving his 5 year old brother, Doodle, because doodle was crippled preventing him from walking. The older brother felt ashamed of his brother for being the way he was he sought out to change him for his own benefit. Over time he slowly taught Doodle how to walk. Then a red ibis appeared on a tree but the ibis fell off and died. Concerned, Doodle offered to bury the bird. As they were going to bury it a heavy storm hit. They both began to run as fast as they could but Doodle collapsed. Doodle screamed and shouted for his brothers help but he didn't turn around. The eldest brother waited and waited for his brother to return.

"i was embarrassed of having a brother that couldn't walk" is direct characterization towards doodle because it explains what Doodle has to deal with. but indirect characterization for the older brother because it shows that he is scared of being judged.

irony- The scarlet ibis they found ended up dying like how later on, Doodle dies with bright red stained clothing looking just like the ibis. Another sign of irony is when Doodles parents decide to name him William Armstrong although that name would only suit someone who would live a long life. Symbolism- because the ibis shows us that Doodle was going to die. Another sign of symbolism is the coffin because it lies waiting for the little boy showing us that he was going to die eventually. Imagery- "The flower garden was strained with rotting brown magnolia petals and Ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox." This sentence contains imagery that appeals to both sight and smell. Another sign of imagery is every encounter Doodle and the narrator have with their favorite place, the Old Woman Swamp, is rich in imagery and descriptive sentences.
