However, there are also low-speed electric vehicles that are legal to drive on public roads with weight, power, and speed restrictions. The term typically refers to vehicles that can travel on highways.

How Safe are Electric Cars?

Heaviness
An EV is typically heavier than an equivalent gasoline car due to the weight of the batteries itself. The extra weight of a vehicle contributes to safety since its occupants will often sustain fewer and less severe injuries in an accident than those of a lighter vehicle (to the occupant). The occupants of a (900 kg) vehicle will typically sustain 50% greater injuries in a collision than those of a (1,400 kg) vehicle. If they collide with a pedestrian or another vehicle, heavier autos pose a greater risk to anyone outside the vehicle.

Stability
By placing the battery in a skateboard arrangement, the centre of gravity is lowered, boosting driving stability and reducing the likelihood that a collision may occur due to lack of control.
It is stated that having a separate motor close to or inside each wheel makes the vehicle safer due to superior handling.

Risk of fire
After a collision or a mechanical issue, the batteries in electric vehicles might catch fire. There have been fire occurrences involving plug-in electric automobiles, albeit fewer per mile than ICE vehicles. High-voltage systems in certain cars are programmed to turn off instantly in the case of an airbag deployment. firemen may also receive training for manual high-voltage system shutdown in the event of breakdown. A thermal imaging camera is advised to detect any potential re-ignition of battery fires and much more water may be needed than for ICE car fires.

Are electric cars better than petrol?

Cost of running

Since electricity is more affordable than fuel, electric cars do not require fuel to operate. In Malaysia, the cost of power needed to charge an electric car is almost 40% less expensive than the cost of petrol needed to drive a car the same distance. Instead of stopping at a gas station, you may charge your electric car overnight by installing EV charging stations in your garage. However, public charging stations that are accessible in the neighbourhood may quickly recharge your device's battery, up to 80%, in just one hour.

Maintenance cost

Despite the high purchase price of electric vehicles, they are less expensive to maintain and service than their gasoline-powered equivalents. The rationale is that, in comparison to machines powered by ICE, electric cars have significantly less moving parts to maintain. The latter calls for routine oil changes, upkeep of other mechanical components, and replacement of worn-out components. Contrarily, the upkeep of electric vehicles necessitates less regular trips to the service centre for brake fluid top-offs and battery health checks.

CO2 emissions

Internal combustion engines, which power petrol cars, burn fuel to produce power and emit dangerous pollutants like Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, and Sulfur Dioxide. These gases are not only bad for the environment, but also for people's health. Electric vehicles are now more desirable than gasoline-powered vehicles due to the high demand to address these rising emissions. The former produces energy without the usage of any fuel. Instead, they are equipped with an electric motor that turns the wheels using electrical energy from a battery. Electric automobiles are better for the environment and our health because there are no emissions.

Is it worth getting an electric car in Malaysia?

Pros

Environmentally-Friendly
Electric cars provide the chance for cleaner air and happier lives, making them more than just a mode of transportation. The environmental advantages alone make this new technology worthwhile to investigate; not only will you be enhancing the quality of life in your community, but you'll also be reducing exposure to dangerous pollutants and lowering carbon emissions, which are directly linked to climate change!

Time Saving
It is true that charging an electric vehicle may take longer thanit would at a gas station. The fact is, you have to wait in front of a pump to refuel.

With an electric vehicle, you may leave it plugged in to charge while you go. If necessary, you could cook dinner, join your family, or even take a nap. It feels like you have your own personal gas station when you have a plug station in your home, but be aware that getting one personal charging pump could cost you a fortune.

Far Distance Driving
A common misperception is that electric vehicles can't go long distances quickly. If you're concerned that an electric car won't have enough range, don't be! A typical family automobile covers 37 miles per day on average, and you may drive for a whole week on one charge of your vehicle.

Better Driving Costs

Let's contrast the Perodua Myvi (Petrol Car), our national vehicle, with the Nissan Leaf (EV). The Myvi's fuel tank holds roughly 40 gallons of fuel, according to the official Perodua website. You will need to spend RM82 (RON 95) and RM172.4 (RON 97) to fill it up to the full tank, according to the most recent fuel price update.

The Nissan Leaf, on the other hand, has a typical 40kWh battery and can go up to 311km on a single charge. Malaysians only have to pay RM 20.64 to fully charge it (Source: Nissan). If you charge it at your own charging station, the price can be lower.

Cons

Limited Charging Port

With over two million electric vehicles on its highways, it is evident that China is setting the bar when it comes to this technology. Europe is not far behind with over 1 million! Malaysia is more entry-level in comparison to them.

As a result, finding a charging station is difficult, so you should be ready and make sure your car is completely charged before long trips. According to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, there are only 251 public EV charging stations (ChargeEVs) in the nation, which is insufficient if you want to widely adopt EVs.

Limited Vehicle Options

Many Malaysians might find the idea of an electric car strange and unusual. It is clear that there is now no market demand for electric vehicles (EVs) given that the public prefers old gas guzzlers to them. Due to a lack of market demand, importing one electric vehicle is very expensive. For those who are truly interested and have the money, there are only a few car options accessible.

Expensive

One of the most affordable options is the Nissan Leaf as we mentioned above, with a starting price of RM180,566. If money is not an issue, you might consider the Tesla Model S with the price tag over RM650,000. As you can see, the price for EVs in Malaysia will need at least RM100k and above to own one, due to limited options.

Customers won't feel driven to purchase electric automobiles without government incentives and support. This is one of the reasons Malaysians prefer to buy a gas automobile rather an EV since it is less expensive.

Vehicle Price
An electric vehicle requires a big expense. A ride typically costs RM 150,000. It is a bit of a luxury to be able to own such a vehicle. The current state of affairs, which includes record-high employment losses, may have a negative impact on consumers' spending power.

Charging points
There aren't many charging stations available right now. Electric vehicles must be charged before driving, as you may already be aware. Yes, the fast-charging wallbox is installed when you purchase an electric vehicle. Your automobile can still need a recharge if you're travelling a long distance even though you charged it overnight. That might not be feasible given the scarcity of charging connectors.

Charging Time
Refueling at a gas station will only take a short while. An electric car would need to be fully charged, though, which would take several hours. The time difference is quite noticeable. Therefore, planning is necessary to avoid getting lost while on vacation.
