In 1943, Greek communist started a civil war which was backed by the USSR. President Truman's Doctrine aided Greece which lead to their victory. The Communists were defeated and Greece entered NATO in 1952.

April 3rd 1948, The United States was concerned that if it did not provide aid to help rebuild Western Europe after World War ll, the Soviet Union would step in and these countries would turn to communism. In 1947, secretary of State George Marshall announced a $17 billion aid package called the "Marshall Plan" to provide funds to countries like Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Italy. The aid fueled an economic revival in Western Europe, doubling industrial production within 4 years.
