He was born in Boston in 1809 and was orphaned of both parents, he moved to England with his foster family where he began to study. Returning to the United States, he attended a prestigious university in which he was expelled for his alcohol and dedication to the game. In 1829, after getting into conflict with his father, he went to live with his aunt in Boston, where he worked as a journalist. He married his cousin Virginia thirteen years old, suffered from tuberculosis, which inspired many of his stories. Between 1835 and 1845 he wrote the most famous works, including "The Pit and the Pendulum" and "The Masque of the Red Death".
