Trip to Jones Gallery.

During the trip to the Jones Gallery in Saint John, I learned quite a bit about their sales approach. It also helped me see that I still have quite a lot to learn when it comes to owning a business.

They said during the meeting that when running a business, you always have to be dependable and quick to respond, which I'll admit I am good at neither of those things. It is something I will be sure to work on consistently as I move forward in my practice, but it will take a lot of time.

Another thing they said that stuck to me was "Be proud of your work, enthusiasm counts." I am very proud of my work, and I do love what I make, but it can be hard selling my own work to people. When it comes down to Joanna, or Sarah's work, I don't mind lifting it up and giving it all the attention, but that is something that is tricky to do for my own work.

All that being said. I am very glad we went to see their Gallery, and I feel I learned a lot from the experience. I will continue practicing talking about my work though.

After Natalie's very powerful performance, we met in the classroom afterwards to discuss her practice and our own in detail. She was very positive in the meeting and told us that as long as we have passion for our work, it will be okay. Natalie also gave the great advice that if we are ever meeting with a mentor/advisor for help on projects, bring them coffee! Honestly one of the best pieces of advice I have received.

Finding Inspiration

Throughout this class I have seen a few lectures, and all have them have shown me that everyone gets inspired by different things, and every artists process is different. That is something I have struggled with, somehow I always feel like since my process is my own, it can't be right. But I really just need to grab onto what I find beautiful and go ham. Especially when Janice said "Research comes before the Art." I couldn't agree more.

I finally finished editing the podcast and I've discovered editing is a lot harder than I thought it would be. And I had to record the whole thing twice because my phone wouldn't connect with my computer.

Although it was a pain in the butt, I am really happy with how it came out. There is a bit of swearing in the blooper reel, but I feel like it goes with my aesthetic.

I feel like it could be pretty interesting! I'll start brain storming and we will see what I come up with.

I want to do a series of videos of me going through all of the stages of making a pot. Starting at repurposing the clay, wedging it, throwing it and trimming it. When the piece is bone dry I want to put water in it and time lapse it dissolving.

For another video, I want to get a variety of different foods and attempt throwing a pot with it. Im thinking Ice cream and cream cheese for two of them. I'll have to make a list of food when I have a minute to sit and think about consistency and such.

One of the videos I am thinking of doing I'm not too sure about. I want to do a studio vlog type video where I show a full day of behind the scenes in the ceramic studio. And get everyone in the studio to say hello. That way people can see the artists behind the work that comes from the basement!

Possibly going to do a stop motion of me hand building a pizza pipe or something geometric. I don't want that one to be too long though so it will have to be something small.

The last video I am thinking of doing is one that shows how to make a teapot all the way through. Including painting, waxing and glazing. At the end I want to show how long a piece actually takes. Or possibly have a timer built in? Not too sure about that one yet. Still workshopping it.
