The Ocean is the reason why Kahlen is suffering, but she is also the reason why Kahlen survived.
The relationship between the Ocean and Kahlen is very complicated. Rising Action: One day, when Kahlen is at the library in Miami, she meets a boy named Akinli and falls in love. "There’s always room for love. Even if it’s as small as a crack in the door..” She later goes on a date with him, which is against the rules of the Ocean.

Climax: When Kahlen runs away from  the Ocean after the sinking of a cruise ship, she finds herself in a small town in Maine: Port Clyde. Coincidentally,  the small town is actually Akinli's home. there, Kahlen finds Akinli, and decides that she can spend the day with him. But everything goes wrong when Kahlen accidentally speaks in front of Akinli, and he is almost killed.

Falling Action: Kahlen falls ill, something that should not be possible for a Siren. She, her sisters, and the Ocean soon realized that Akinli had the same illness. They later discover that the reason for it all was because Akinli had heard Kahlen's voice. The only way to ensure that both of them survived was to release Kahlen from her sentence as Siren.

Resolution: The ocean finally agrees to let Kahlen end her duty to Her early, since that is the only way to save Kahlen.
