Representation

Shakespeare uses representation in his writing to give the reader information so that they can have an understanding of the time or era. For example, in Othello, we can see conflict between the Christians and the Ottoman Empire (1.3 Line 33-35) Shakespeare creates the background of war and throughout the story, he includes information about those conflicts through the characters dialogue. We are able to see that Shakespeare uses allusions to places such as “ Rhodes” or “Cyprus”. (1.3 Line 20-25). Knowing places can help the reader understand how the people are affected in that area during that time and educates the reader about the events during that time in that area. Shakespeare also uses an archaic tone in his writing . We can see this when Barbantio says “ But thou must needs be sure my spirits and my place have in their power to make this bitter to thee”(1.1 Line 99-101) As a reader, you will be able to see the difference in language compared to the more modern language we use today.

Representation

The conceptual understanding of representation applies to Shakespeare due to the use of racism, sexism and jealousy. In "Othello", the main character is a black man in a position of power. That alone at the time must have sparked controversy. In "Romeo and Juliet", if i remember correctly, Mercutio was a gay man and one of the supporting characters. In "Othello" again, there are prostitutes as side characters who still play an impactful role in his plays. Saying that Shakespeare didn't represent the minorities or people who didn't have an equal place in society would be lying. He represented the gays, prostitutes and people of color in his works and we have the works themselves to prove it.
In "Othello", the representation of the racism that blacks face is evident when Iago tells Othello's father-in-law, "an old black ram is tupping your white ewe" 1.1.96-7 where he tells Brabantio that his daughter has been "thieved" by Othello by using animals as a metaphor. He calls Othello an "old black ram" to be racist, and Desdemona (the daughter) a "white ewe" to represent her purity, but it also shows how he views her as a weak, helpless being .
When Othello kills Desdemona, he confesses and is told "O, the more angel she, and you the blacker 🤬!" 5.2.161Which is blatant racism and while it doesnt show sexism, it is open slurs against Othello. Of course the situation is different, but it shows true colors. The consequences of this racism is evident when Othello says "Speak of me as i am, nothing extrenuate, nor set down aught in malice. Then must you speak of one that loved not wisely, but too well; of one not easily jealous, but being wrought, perplexed in the extreme..." 5.2.402-6Othello says that he wasnt always an angry killer. He was someone who loved to naïvely and too deep. He was gullible and easily jealous, so those around him shouldnt blame his blackness for his actions, but rather his humanity.

Claim: Shakespeare shows his perspective in Othello through the characters and the way in which he describes the characters.
• Shakespeare believes women are foolish and gullible. He shows this through the characters of Emilia and Desdemona. Act 3 Scene 3 Line 305. Emilia foolishly hands Iago the handkerchief even though Iago treats her wrongly she still at his disposition. She continuously helps him in his plot against Othello. This can relate to the modern world as women are seen as fools and less than men.
• Shakespeare shows how society can be prejudice towards one race. Act 1 Scene 3 Line 63. Brabantio as well as on there vencians hold this negative perspective towards Othello due to his race. This shows how during the time period racism influenced how people perceived the African race. Brabantio says that othello practices witch craft because his daughter could not fall in love with a black man.
• Shakespeare shows how hatred can cause the Demi’s of a society. Act 3 Scene 3 Line 322-326. In this line Iago has poisoned othello’s mind. He slowly leaves him to his demise as well as the demise of those around him. Iago is not only taking down othello but is also dragging down those linked to othello’a life. This demonstrates to the audience how hatred can cause a lot of blood shed.
