My students have really loved getting to end our day with the read aloud and have two separate blocks for skills and knowledge. It has helped us to break each lesson up and gives us enough time to explore and work with each aspect of the lessons.

As the skills lessons begin to get longer, is it okay to use some of the spelling words/lessons at different times throughout the day? Maybe as morning work or independent time?

My students really, really love the little student readers and stories within them. They ask to browse through them during quiet reading times, even when they could be looking at their library books or books from my bookshelf.

Echoing Carrie's comment-- we just started Skills Unit 3 and are finding that these lessons have more content than the previous units. The writing components are significantly more time-consuming as well. We are thinking about splitting most lessons over two days to ensure we really get to everything, or fitting some components into our morning meeting or other times of day. What do you think?

I've been utilizing the workbook page components for transition times. We have Language Arts after lunch and recess and the children need some time for putting their coats and lunches away, using the bathroom, etc.

Instead of doing that when we first return, they leave everything at their desk and we jump right into the lesson. Then when there is a workbook component, I give the directions and then let them work independently while calling each table for a closet/bathroom break. It's a small thing but I feel like it uses our time more wisely and keeps everyone present during the lesson.
