In the realistic fiction novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio the main character is Augigie Pullman. In the beginning, Auggie can be described in many ways. One way to describe him is timid. In the novel, Auggie states, "Since I've never been to a real school before, I am pretty much totally and completely petrified" (Palacio 4). Because he is afraid of things like this, he is timid. One trait he has at the end of the novel is courageous. In the novel he states, "We put our arms around each others shoulders and for the first time I can remember, I wasn't even thinking about my face" (Palacio 307). This proves he is no longer self conscious.

Another main character from the novel is Jack. In the beginning of the story he is judging. the text states, "I thought he was wearing a zombie mask or something." (Palacio 136). This shows he was judging his face. However, at the end of the novel, he is a good friend. He states, "Leave him alone okay" (Palacio 266). He was defending Auggie. Thus proving he is a good friend.

A common theme in the realistic fiction novel wonder by R.J. Palacio is to not judge a book by it's cover. this means you should not judge a book by its cover. This means you should not judge someone by their looks but by who they are on the inside. This relates to the novel because Summer states "Some kids have come out and asked me why I hang out with "the freak" so much. (Palacio 119). This proves people judge him by his looks. Summer then responds, "Because he's a nice kid!" (Placio 119). Proving she does not care what he looks like and judges him based off his character.
