Prometheus (forethought) was a god who was the champion of humans meaning he did everything to get the humans to succeed at thriving.
Prometheus slaughtered an ox then split it into two portions wrapped in hide. One was all the bones and fat while the other was the meat. Prometheus then went to Zeus with the two bundles Zeus picked the bigger of the bundles which happened to be the bundle of bone and fat. Enraged that he was tricked, he withheld fire from man and shouted let them eat their meat raw. Prometheus being the champion of men set out to get fire for them. He entered Mount Olympos and stole fire from the chariot of the sun and carried it down to mankind. He showed them how to make fire, keep warm, and cook food. Zeus then saw fire on Earth and was enraged. Zeus sent a beautiful woman named Pandora down to Prometheus' slow-witted brother Epimetheus (afterthought). There was a box in Epimetheus' house that Pandora was ever so curious about. One day the curiosity overwhelmed her and she opened the box and out came all the misery, disease, and pain in the world. Realizing what she had done she shut the box immediately. Pandora then heard the faint weak cry of hope, and opened the box once again to let out hope into the world to comfort mankind. Zeus then planned for a punishment put directly upon Prometheus. Zeus chained Prometheus to a rock in the mountains exposing him to the elements. Zeus also send an eagle to eat out Prometheus' liver which grows back everyday so it can be ripped out again.

The characters names, specifically Prometheus and Epimethius represent the knowledge of the two charterers. Epimethius means afterthought, which means he is slow witted and not as smart as his brother. The name Prometheus means the opposite, with the definition being forethinker.

In another part of the myth, Prometheus is chained to a rock. The chains specifically represent confinement, because Prometheus cannot escape, but also represent that Prometheus is always chained to Zeus because of his actions in the past, which was the deception of Zeus.
Pandora is also a symbol of temptations because of how she releases terrible plagues and diseases onto the world because Epimethius took her as his wife. This represents his foolishness and temptations, and how easily Epimethius lets Pandora into his life so easily.
