Week one

On the first day of pre-production we did a read through of the script and went through what each department needed to do for each scene. Ross then did another read through with me and the other actors so we could look in depth in to the context of each scene. I went through my script and wrote down my emotions and objectives for each scene. I also went through each line and underlined the words that are important and I would emphasise. When I went home I started learning my lines and researched characters that are similar to mine I could take inspiration from (see character development notes).
On the second day of production we started blocking some scenes. The first scene I blocked with EmmaRose and Ross was scene three. This is the very first scene I am in and it is where I get angry at Boyson so it needed to be blocked to have dynamic and energy to engage the audience. We also blocked the Corridor scene between mine and Jess' characters. This was helpful as EmmaRose helped me figure out exactly what my tone towards Jess' character should be in this scene and what the movement is. The last scene we blocked was the scene between mine and Jess' character by the fence when I persuade it to stick with me and revolt against Boyson. This again was helpful in knowing what the movement for the scene will be and the emotion of the interaction between the characters. We also did an exercise where we had to answer questions and interact with each other as our characters. This helped me build on my character and make a final decision on how exactly I was going to play her. When I went home I researched depression and anxiety (the mental illnesses my character has) symptoms so I could understand them and my character more.
On the Wednesday we went over the scenes we did not cover on Tuesday in depth and also started blocking the dorm room scenes as we now knew what the dorm looked like. I struggled with getting the energy and emotion right in the scene where I am rushing in to warn the other characters about Boyson. I worked on it with EmmaRose until we were both happy with it, and continued to work on my lines when I got home. I also wrote my character biography on this day.
On Thursday we did a tech run with Gabriel so we were aware of how we were going to block the scenes with the camera. I made sure to be completely off script by this day so I could really focus on my emotions and blocking in the scenes. We also had to bring in an item that means something to our character. I brought in a small drawing my characters mum did of her before she died.
On the final day of pre-production we simply did a full run through of the script blocking every scene and making sure we were all happy with each scene and were completely clear on what we were doing for each one. At the end of the day we had a big group meeting and went over the plan for the first day of production.

week one

On the first day of filming we filmed the scene where mine and Jess' character get killed. I made sure I was on time to get my hair and make up done and on location ready for my call time so we stuck to schedule. This scene is of course a very intense scene to begin with and I found it difficult to fully connect with to get emotional in. However I stayed professional and made sure to do the best I could for every take so we could get the shots done in the time we had. As I was unhappy with my performance, I made sure to check with Emmarose if she was happy with it throughout, as if the director is happy then I have done my job. I made sure I kept focused and knew my lines and we finished in the time we have with plenty of coverage.
On the Tuesday we filmed the scenes where we say who we are voting for. As we all only had one line for this it was a very short and chilled shooting day. When I got home I made sure to go over my lines for the Wednesday shoot and just go over exactly what the emotions and objectives are and what my character is doing in them
On the third day and fourth day of production we filmed all the scenes set in the courtyard and corridors. On the Wednesday it was very cold so to make sure I did not shiver in the scene and ruin my performance I put my hoodie over my arms to keep warm. I did not have any dialogue in these scenes so I had to portray all my emotions and thought through facial expressions and body language. I believe I did well in these scenes and I listened to what the director wanted from me for each scene so they could be exactly how she envisioned, which thankfully was what I also envisioned. We had very short periods of time in this location so I was sure to stay focused during and in between takes as per so I did not cause any delays. When filming the corridor scenes on this day I struggled with finding my mark and keeping the energy up and I took the longest on these scenes.
On the final day of week one of production we filmed the fight scenes in the cultivation suite. The main thing I had to focus on these scenes were to block them exactly how we did in rehearsal and confirm with the other actor exactly what we were doing in the fight scene, to avoid any injuries. I made sure I went over this before we did the take, so we were ready for it and were not delaying the day having to go over it and retake constantly.

Week two

On the first and second day of the final week of production we filmed all the scenes set in the dorm room. These were quite long shoot days as there are 8 scenes set in the dorm and we got plenty of coverage for all the scenes, however I made sure to keep my energy up and have a positive attitude on set. I knew my all my lines for each scene and if EmmaRose had any notes for me, I made sure I listened and changed my performance in the next take so we were all happy and I did not make us behind schedule. Generally EmmaRose was happy with my performance and did not need to give me any notes, or was happy with it the take after I listened to the notes she had so overall I am happy with how I performed these scenes.
On the Wednesday we filmed the scenes set in Boyson's office. I was happy with my performance in two scenes. In the first scene where I am angry at Boyson about feeling no change in three months I believe I portrayed the anger well without over acting and EmmaRose also seemed happy with my performance. In the second scene where Boyson is question mine and Jess' character I don't actually have any dialogue so it was all in my facial expressions. I did what EmmaRose wanted from me and again, she and I were both happy with my performance. I was not needed on the Thursday as they filmed the office scenes that only had Boyson and the administrator in them.
On the final day we filmed the scene where I convince Jess' character to stick with me and take down Boyson. Although this is quite a short scene, it still took a while to film due to trying to get the camera and lighting right for the takes. It was rather cold again this day so I made sure to keep warm in between takes to it would not affect my performance. I believe I performed well in this scene as both the director and I were happy with it straight away.
