Anne Gilleran's nicely guided video is a valuable introduction into the field of turning PBL-theory into its PRACTICAL implementation. Listening to the clip made me a) understand that we already do use basics of PBL within our teaching (in class, group or partner work or in collaboration with other teachers/classes/subjects) every now and then and b) feel encouraged to easily develop and use it more by reflecting more on the way HOW I ask classroom questions.

No doubt, inquiry driven class is a good way to create a lesson...pupils have to be a creative and especially active part of teaching.It's true that nowadays it is simple finding out informations and answers so we have to move kids being more and more corious and doing every task with awareness even if everybody coul find out everything simply and quickly.In addiction giving them authentic problems or tasks put into reality what they study and learn.I also agree that collaboration is a key point that makes learning nicer and funnier.

The PBL is something I realy like to use with my classes. The problem is that students do not like to cooperate so much, because they feel like being evaluated on the whole and not individually; they do not like group works so much because there is always at least one student that does not co-operate. I have no experience in PBL but I am very willing to learn the approach within this course, at least to get a guide of the method and then, to try to apply it with my students. I am deeply aware of the benefits of it, both in terms of developing competences and skills but also in creating a more interesting and attractive atmosphere in the classroom, with positive consequences over the students. The PBL is really wonderful for schol exchange activities. All students of different countries have to participate to a topic. Established the topic, the language, all the materials are shared with a final product, such as a booklet or a journal. I have had such an experience like that: it was fantastic!

I think this video is really interesting because it offers us a lot of ideas to develop. The 7 keys are fanstatically summed up, but what I appreciate a lot is that every solution may have merits and demerits and the students have to analyse and judge. I think this should be the new departure for teachers. I agree! "This is the basic tenet of PBL. It is of course more demanding on both student and teacher, but it is also more rewarding" . Students learn more deeply if they have engaged in activities that require applying classroom-gathered knowledge to real-world problems: "Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand."

Working using PBL proved to be very effective, to my mind, compared to ‘traditional’ learning especially because when pupils know that the work they are creating in a project will be shared with other people who have nothing to do with its creation , the level of commitment increases supporting the idea ‘ the more I am concretely involved, the more I learn’. In addition, pupils’ families, as well as other people from the local community, get to see what is going on in the school, providing an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the school and community.

PBL is a good teaching opportunity because today’s students often find school to be boring and meaningless. In PBL, students are active, not passive, and can understand content more deeply, remember what they learn and apply what they know and can do to new situation. Students are divided in small groups and each of them have to face a part of the project, so they learn to cooperate and work together to carry out a common goal. I get involved in planning 'projects' any time my students show interest for a particular topic or social life matter. What a wonderful way to make me "rewind" and 'rethimk' my small projects. What a pity they are not still interdisciplinary, but 'daily' subject-planned!!!!

Implementing the PBL approach requires our teaching to be both learner- and teacher-led. Students are active and responsible for their own learning, inside their learning environment i.e. a group work. Everything seems so easy and natural that you must ask yourselves way we do not do that in schools as a habit and not by accident, once in year. I discovered that I've been using the enquiry- based learning for years in my literature and history classes. The questions my students are used to dealing with are not only not googleable, they are clearly out-of the-way questions whose answers can only be found after deep reflections....but when the answer pops out of one of their heads it really is rewarding for the whole class.

I have always been interested in guided discovery learning, even though I realise it is not always feasible (a methodological choice always depends on the teaching-learning context).
I think that both the inquiry-based learning method and the problem-based learning method are involving, motivating and challenging.They are student-centred and they foster curiosity, and intrinsic interest in the subject matter.. They do not exemplify a didactic teaching (teaching by telling); learners are not expected to use and remember the new materials, but they work out the new learning by themselves.

Thank you so much for this great contribution. I've often tried to implement a PBL approach in my classes, with some probles though. My major problems have been in sticking to the planned time frame and having the project fit with the other traditional curriculum activities. For this reason, I'd rather thoroughly reject the traditional learning approach and replace it with a PBL approach. It would motivate students more and get better results, then. While listening to your explanation I couldn't stop going with my mind to the numberless times I received from my daughters the same answer to the daily question "what have you done at school today?": NOTHING! How many times have my students replied in the same way to their parents, in spite of all my efforts to prepare good, interesting, funny lessons? Their "nothing" probably stands for"nothing relevant to me" or "nothing that engages me with something I consider real"!! Thank you for this talk. I was already familiar with PBL but I must say that it is not always easy to implement. Nonetheless I keep trying and learning from my mistakes.
Last year I tried to work with podcasts in my class, asking students to interview friends and teachers and to report on the sport activities in the school. We didn't really succeed and reflecting on the experience I realized that my students had really enjoyed it and actively contributed only towards the end of the school year. Why? Because I had not stated my expected outcomes, they hadn't understood what they were meant to achieve. Thank you for telling us about the necessary steps before embarking on a new project. I will bear them in mind while planning for this year project on eTwinning.

Last June I've started the PBL course at Teacher Academy and created a detailed PBL plan that I've planed for this school year. I've just started it in my classroom and I'm really happy how it goes so far. We're finishing the first third of it and my students and I are already quite taken by the opportunities PBL offers.

I wasn't all that brave, though, to involve other teachers. Not this first time, that is. Next time it's going to be widespread!

After this video, I can say that eTwinning projects and Comenius and Erasmus designed just the way it is described. After the experience of working on such projects, I can say that the results achieved all students were stunning, their motivation and activity has been at a very high level. I really love inquiry and problem based methods and I believe that they are the right way to achieve significant learning but I had difficulties with my students: they are used to be passive and getting them active requires a lot of fatigue. It's as if they don't take serious lessons different from traditional lessons. Anyway, I won't give up :-) I'll get them used to PBL e IBSE methods, but I need practise and collect ideas. That's the right place to do it. :-)

I learned a lot from the previous MOOc about PBL, and now I have began practicing it. I use etwinning actively and my students are more eager to learn. . Last year we worked in 3 different etwinning projects. My students created storboards , animations and augmented reality working together with the students from Italy and Romenia. About “questioning”, the fist step for the Inquiry-based learning method: the Education system in my country is very chained up to a too traditional methods, because the teacher often aim to make the pupils to answer and not to make correct and right questions.So questioning is more important than answering and it is difficult to apply in a system in which a loto of teacher think they are the guardians or the keeper of truth. I wish I quote prophessor Roberto Provana, who titles a chapter “The art of questioning” and asks: first of all a question: why it is advantageous to learn to ask a question (and to ask oneself questions)? In fact, “learn to learn” means also learn to learn to ask questions and to ask oneself a question or better ask onself the right question, than search or give answers. questioning, continues with exploration and investigation and ends with finding a
solution, drawing a reasonable conclusion, making a substantive decision or

2. Students are encouraged to question arguments, information, ideas, opinions and viewpoints, to go deeper and generate new
questions, which will lead them to new knowledge. ... The whole purpose of PBL is to encourage pupils to research and to find answers
and solutions, to help them develop higher-order thinking skills: analyse the
information they find, interpret it and compare their findings, synthesis the
ideas, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, peer and self-assess it, find solutions

3.the problem-based learning method, which is more

I have been doing PBL with my students for the past five years. A question is presented to the class and groups are set to investigate having one variable changing ex. time of flight of parachute vs number of strings or the best seating for the school gym considering the area of contact with the floor vs pressure rendered thereon.

Even though this is time consuming as a task, demanding a lot of planning and involves out of class activity it is very much worth the while as it makes for a much better learning experience for all the cohort in a mixed abiity classroom.

Hello everybody. I enjoyed the video very much since I totally agree with the main points analysed by Ms Anne Gilleran. Thanks to Anne Gilleran for the presentation of PBL made clearly and concisely. I find it very interesting that the question that should start a PBL should be "non-Googleable Driving Questions". It 's true, in fact, that today's students are all on-line knowledge and this can be very useful. However, it could be negative in other ways: for example, may lack the incentive to critical and creative learning. It seems to me that a PBL could urging students these basic skills.

I found the video very interesting. It 'important to have solutions to problems that are perceived. Able to transfer skills to students through new technologies for the approach to mathematics is of great importance. In part, these measures have also been made by me in my school.
But overall I find an energy fund that can be seen from the video shot.
The introduction of the project, group work and testing activities and ensure the workload of the students found it effective. The collection and analysis of the results of the learning process based on the interpretation of the results I find it enriching.
Higher order thinking and reasoning more there is hope that they can then apply their knowledge and skills outside the classroom.

Yes, eTwinning is great for PBL, but I've never used it in my "Maths in French" classes. Only in my CLIL classes. The most interesting points in it is that students share their work we others. They don't work only for their teacher and classmates

Working on projects, whose goals are clearly stated in advance, enhances every activity you do with your pupils: each student should or better has to know exactly what must be the final outcome. Students must be aware that they can do their best if they work in a team where everyone is trying to reach the same objectives. It is thoroughly true that students work better when each of them knows exactly what to do and when the teacher gives them mid-term and/or final goals which they can realistically fulfil. But unluckily nowadays in most classrooms what is lacking is our students'capability to work in a team and share the same behavioural code. They don't often like working together or perhaps they can't do it. There is still a long run to do in some geographical areas in order to put in practice what we know teoretically. But I know I am stubborn and so I will go on trying.

I was enrolled in the previous Project Based Learning course offered by the teacher academy and found it very important and effective for 21st century students. I feel that PBL tasks encourage not only engagement with colleagues and peers, but also require the students to take hold of their own learning processes, which I believe to be a much stronger motivator than the traditional top down approach from the teacher to the students.

Mrs Gilleran gives a very clear and useful explanation about PBL approach methods.
It can also be used as as guide and a starting point. However I'm not sure we can use PBL in all our classes because of the curricola contents we are asked to follow, so, in my opinion we can set a project a year.

Students work better together and are more motivated if they are asked to find a solution to a problem. Learning can be really fun if they find a relaxed environment where they can share and support each other instead of being competitive or even worse being pushy.
We, as teachers should start to collaborate among us as well. Watching such an interesting video can be a good step forward to leave traditional methods behind and start a new and more effective approach
