We know that the whole child goes to school, so why are we required to spend so much time on academics instead of growing the whole child? "Time is increasingly limited for physical, social, emotional and cultural development, a s evidenced by reductions in recess, physical education, art, music, theater, and even integrated theme-based academic units." Does anyone get to do integrated themed units anymore?

I love the part on page 19 that talks about how students drag after lunch but, "Offering a quiet time after lunch, during which children can experience a few moments of precious silence in the classroom reading, drawing, writing, or resting by themselves can energize their brains and refresh their spirits." Siestas for all!

I love how changing the wording of "Hurry up children, it's time for gym" to "Don't forget we have gym in five minutes". I know I need to work on this with my own children and now I have for the last week. They seem to get things done quicker and I am not "hurrying them up so much". I like Chip's sentence, "We need to help manage this process rather than drag them helter-skelter through a hectic day".

I can relate to the paragraph about 6 year olds being found of the pencil sharpener and 7 year olds the eraser. With first graders I put fix it tape on their work that needs correcting and my second graders use it independently. I often have to step in or a whole roll will be used by the little "perfectionists."

What are we doing to our students! I find it so upsetting that developmentally fourth graders are not good at taking tests and yet that is what we benchmark. We are creating anxious little children!!!

I find this poem so depressing, which I know is the point. It has been awhile since I have worked with this age group, but the poem reminded me of my niece and the struggles she had at this age. I wish I had this book to give my sister-in-law back then. It provides much insight!

As a parent reading about twelve year olds I really see the importance of making sure my children have good friends early on to help each other through the pre-teen and teenage years. Reading about the importance of friendships at this age reminded me of all the peer pressure and the decisions that had to be made of how I wanted to behave. I don't envy kids of today!
