Teacher started class with a vocab test and then graded the work together in the class. She had the students call out their score, which I am not personally a fan of. She then gave any student who wanted it the opportunity to redo the quiz with notes for half credit. The class then did a math lab with partners to learn about probability. She had all of her objectives clearly listed as well as what the class can expect to do that day and what was due and upcoming. She gave homework to take home at the end of the class and reviewed the homework with the class. Having class objectives is a great technique to keep students on track throughout the week. Although I was not a fan of this teachers style of teaching, I thought that she still had lots of effective techniques that work for her classroom.

Teacher had objectives and materials needed for the hour on the projector before class started. She gave clear instructions and went through all of the material in detail for all of her hand outs and went through the assignment together with the students first. She did not have a list of what assignments were due or any way to keep students on track besides their agendas, which I do not think is effective. She had students work in partners and was constantly moving around the classroom to keep students on task and answer question. She was going over internet safety and social media which I feel is a VERY important topic for middle school aged kids to go over. This teacher had a large amount of special education students in her class, but she effectively blended the two together into a seamless class group.

Teacher started class and gained the students attention before explaining instructions about the upcoming week, including State tests. The class did centers all period to prepare for state testing, although teacher did not tell students that this was prep for the tests, allowing students to keep an open mind and not become bored. I was surprised to see centers because I think of them as an elementary school thing, but the students seemed to enjoy the activity. The teacher was constantly moving around the centers to help answer questions and keep students on task, as well as a para. The centers reviewed parts of speech, vocab, different types of paragraphs, etc. The teacher had the weekly agenda, bell work, homework, the day's activities, and objectives for the day on a board so that students could be well informed and on task. Teacher gave reminders about time as well to keep students on task. Teacher was very effective in time management which is a key to success for the classroom.

Teacher gained the students attention and introduced what they would be doing that hour. The class took the system of operations exam today, which she reviewed with them using games the day before. A para took the special education students to a separate classroom so that they could take their exam in a more comfortable setting with the assistance of a para. The teacher had her weekly plan and her daily objectives and assignments on the board for students to clearly see. This is a good resource that lots of teachers in the building utilize because it helps to keep SPED and regular students both on track throughout the week. The teacher handed out the tests and gave clear instructions and answered any questions about the exam before beginning. She provided calculators for all of the students and gave them two class periods to complete the test. I thought that offering two periods was too much for a test, but that could be an effective strategy for her classroom.

I enjoyed my time at Wilbur Middle. I had the opportunity to observe both regular and SPED students inside of a normal classroom setting. The school staff was well organized and ensured that I had a schedule for the entire day. I was able to work directly with all students and observe how they fit into the classroom, how they interact with their peers, both special ed and regular, and also how teachers and other staff interacted with them. I enjoyed being able to move around the halls during passing period and observe how all of the students interacted with each other. I spotted SPED and regular students walking to class together or helping each other out, which I think speaks highly of the school environment.

Teacher started class by complimenting them on how hard they worked yesterday. He did not start class with bell work because it was right before spring break, but still had instructions on the board. He had an extra credit question, the daily topic, and homework on the board as well for students to see and use to stay on task. He used numbers on desks and seating arrangements to give an order to his classroom, as well as all of the other teachers at Wilbur. The teacher was active with all of this students, regardless of who it was and worked one on one with them. He was constantly moving around the room helping answer questions. He used a visual timer to help keeps students on track with the activities in class.

Teacher started class by discussing a phenomenon as bell work instead of using a traditional question. He had an open discussion with students about his bell work to get everybody interested. He had all of this objectives, homework, and what was due written on the board for students to clearly see. The students had a test today in class. He had the students move around so that they were spread out to take their tests. The teacher took time to explain the entire test in great detail before starting and reviewed information before he handed them out. He was strict with his class, but still had fun with them. You could tell that all of the students respected him and that he had control of his classroom, which was very inspirational.

My thoughts about teaching middle school

Although I did enjoy my time at Wilbur and being around the young students, I do not think middle school is for me. I enjoyed the students and the school environment, but I observed how wild the students got and how much one students behavior affected the rest of the classroom. One of the teachers said that by third hour, the students entire day has been set based off of what "drama" is happening that day. Although there is day to day uncertainty with any class, there seems to be in a lot in the middle school setting.
