The starving time was in the winter of 1609-1610. What happened is when John Smith got injured by the local natives, he had to go back to England to get healed. When he was gone the gentlemen took advantage of it and went back to using slaves instead of doing the work themselves. They then started to run out of supplies and more than 70 people died.

Th fort lay in Virginia. The men that got there first started building it in 1607. The first people that started living there were men and then women started living there later. The men arrived with slaves for the gentlemen. The fort was located in the territory of the Powhatan tribe. They sometimes went into war especially during the starving time.

One danger is the Spanish. This was a danger because of all the attacks they had down to other English Forts. Another danger was that supplies could run out, which they soon went low. This would be a problem because they were not could hunters but could fish and grow crops. This is bad because the in the winter the crops would not be able to grow and the water could freeze. Thankfully, the Natives would sometimes trade food with them.

The Powhatan tribe was a peaceful tribe for the most part. They usually traded with the settlers and gave them food when they were in need of some. But they were not always friendly. Sometimes during droughts they would attack the settlers for food and water. During the starving time they also sometimes attacked them for food.
TAP ON THE PICTURE BELOW TO READ.
